a rivalry
~
The dollmaker was awoken by the sound of light knocks against her door. She slowly blinked opened her eyes and turned to look at the door just in time to hear a voice on the other side.
"Donna, I made you some pie," the voice paused, most likely waiting for a response, "I don't know what you're thinking right now. But, I want you to know that your appearance doesn't frighten me or make your importance to me any less. Everyone who has encountered this village always gains a few scars, it's nothing to be ashamed of."
Donna sat up and continued to look at the door.
"I don't want you to feel trapped in your room because of what happened," Y/N paused again. Perhaps she was hoping, wishing for a response, "I'll be collecting my things and going back to the factory. I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable."
The dollmaker rushed up from her bed and hurriedly opened the door, she was met with wide eyes from the woman on the other side, "You don't need to do that!" She exclaimed.
Y/N eyes widened even more at the outburst from the normally quiet woman.
Donna looked down and fiddled with her fingers, "I'm sorry for shutting you out. No one has seen my face in a long time and I got overwhelmed," her voice became softer, "I don't like when people look at me."
The air was silent for a moment before the dollmaker looked away from her fingers and into the woman's eyes, "I would really appreciate it if you stayed."
Y/N smiled, "I would love to stay," she turned to her side and picked up a tray that was resting on a nearby table, "I have pie and tea," she invited herself into the dollmaker's room and placed the tray on the table.
Donna didn't know how to feel. Y/N's personality was loud and a complete parallel to her meek and quiet nature.
It left her feeling confused about being in a friendship with such an eccentric woman, especially when said woman always managed to make her presence completely known.
"Don't just stand there," Y/N said to her, "Come sit with me and have a slice of pie. I made your favorite."
She walked over to her bed and sat down next to Y/N. She was promptly handed a slice of pie and a fork.
Y/N looked at her expectantly for a few seconds, she stared back at her with confusion.
It didn't take long for a look of realization to appear on the young woman's face, "Oh my goodness, I am so sorry," she crossed her arms and looked away, "I forgot you needed to take your veil off." Y/N looked back at her, "I can wait in the hallway."
Donna shook her head, "No, no, no. I don't mind."
"You don't mind taking it off? Are you sure? I don't-"
