Oikawa's POV
Oikawa was at Iwaizumi's apartment in the guest bedroom Iwaizumi had offered for Oikawa to stay in, drowning his face in a pillow, on the verge of screaming. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. Oikawa lifted his head to take a breath, then immediately threw it back down. Fuck, fuck, fuck, I'm in love. His face got hot as those words echoed in his head. This was what was worrying Oikawa about seeing Iwaizumi, and Oikawa realized it as soon as he looked up into Iwaizumi's eyes; his kind expression. We held hands. Fuck. We held hands. Ugh. He realized he was in love this whole time. Since when? I feel like I've been getting these butterflies since middle school. Ughhhh. Oikawa was so frustrated with himself. I've ruined my only career for myself; my pride and joy, and now I'm in love with my best friend- a love that can never be. There's no way Iwaizumi would like him back, and Iwaizumi had dreams and aspirations of his own. A depressed Oikawa who no longer had a future would just hold him back. He gritted his teeth, trying not to scream in the pillow his face is buried into, afraid Iwaizumi might hear, but he was losing his self control. He buried his face so far into the pillow, tears welling up in his eyes, and before he knew it. ... He screamed a frustrated scream. "Fuck," Oikawa swore with the scream. It only lasted a second, but Oikawa felt immensely better, until realizing there were footsteps coming towards the guest bedroom. Iwaizumi heard Oikawa. Oikawa scrunched his face up, letting go as he heard a knock on the bedroom door. "Oi, do you need to... talk?" Iwaizumi said softly behind the door. Oikawa paused. "I- please, can we?" Iwaizumi said. Oikawa was surprised, but not unhappy by his best friend's actions. Hesitantly, he sat up, swinging his legs over the bed as he walked to the door, twisting the doorknob, taking a breath, and finally, cautiously opening it. Iwaizumi stood there with a worried face. Oikawa immediately felt a wave of comfort fall over him. Iwaizumi stood there, his presence just so warming, Oikawa allowed himself to nod. God I feel like a middle school girl. "Yeah, we can talk," Oikawa said with a shaky voice. He was slightly taken aback by his own voice, but as they were walking to the front door, Oikawa glanced at himself in the mirror hung above the small shoe rack next to the front door, and almost gave himself a pity chuckle. His hair was messy and tangled, his face was slightly red and blotchy from crying, and he had this pained expression that couldn't be described by one single emotion. Sadness? Self-pity? Anger? Oikawa couldn't quite put his finger on it. Quickly, he wiped his face to get rid of the tear marks and let out a small sigh.
Iwaizumi passed Oikawa his jacket as he put on his own, leading Oikawa outside. Iwaizumi took the lead, Oikawa following closely behind, but Oikawa had no idea where they were going. Iwaizumi still lived in the same area as when they were growing up, so Oikawa was familiar with it. It had changed a bit, but memories still came flooding back as nostalgia hit him like a truck. Little memories of him and Iwaizumi chasing each other playing tag, or babbling to each other about nothing- you know, six year old stuff. Oikawa felt a small, warm smile creep up on his face. He let it grow as much as it could, but before long a frown overtook his smile again. It wasn't getting any easier to smile. Oikawa's mind kept digging up memories from all those years ago, and he was filled with a warmth in his chest. "Nostalgia, eh?" Iwaizumi said. Oikawa looked up at Iwaizumi and nodded. "Yeah, the good ol' days," Oikawa said, forcing a chuckle. Iwaizumi looked back at Oikawa, as Oikawa was a few steps behind, "no need to force the laugh." Oikawa looked at Iwaizumi. He cracked a tiny smile, and jogged up to Iwaizumi to catch up.
Oikawa was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't realize Iwaizumi had led him to the park that they always went to as kids; a big, grassy park with many random trees and different aspects of nature scattered around. They were on a small hill in a tiny corner of the park, slowly walking up, then down behind it to a small tree, their tree.
When Oikawa and Iwaizumi were in the fifth year, their teacher gave every child in their class a seed to plant a tree wherever they wanted. Unfortunately, the teacher ended up losing a seed, so a kid had to volunteer to share. Oikawa, wanting to volunteer and share with Iwa-Chan, whispered to Iwaizumi his idea. Iwaizumi at first hated the idea, but eventually gave in to Oikawa's sweet talk. With them sharing a seed, they needed to agree on a place together. After some ideas and harsh no's and yeses, they decided on planting it behind the hill in the park, so it could be their secret hide-out. Their teacher told them they couldn't plant the seed in a public place, giving that park as an example, but Oikawa and Iwaizumi didn't care, and did it anyway.
Oikawa's eyes lit up when he saw the tree, jogging towards it. He looked behind him to Iwaizumi, who had a smile spread across his face. His plan had worked, Oikawa got at least a bit of joy out of this. Oikawa smiled back, though not as bright as normal, Iwaizumi was still happy he made even a slight difference. I'm so in love with you, Iwa-Chan. God, I'm such a loser. This is a love that will never be reciprocated, and I know that. Oikawa froze as Iwaizumi caught up to him, sitting down and leaning against the tree, gesturing Oikawa to follow. I may just be a middle school girl trapped in an adult man's body! Oikawa followed and turned his head to look behind him. There, carved into the bark of the tree was 'Iwaizumi+Oikawa= best friends'. Oikawa smiled, looking up at Iwaizumi who was also smiling. "'Thought it would be a good idea to bring you here," Iwaizumi says, his words filled with victory. Oikawa looked up and nodded, "yeah, I think it was a good idea." Both looked away from each other staring at their beautiful surroundings in a comfortable silence before Iwaizumi broke it with: "Did you think about how to tell your parents?" Oikawa looked over, meeting Iwaizumi's eyes. Fuck. "I- uh- no," Oikawa stuttered. Iwaizumi eyed him, "I'll be there when you do it, no need to be worried." Oikawa nodded, looking away from Iwaizumi before saying, "yeah. Thanks, Iwa-Chan."
This... was nice. There wasn't anything Oikawa wished for more than to just stay here forever, other than being able to play volleyball again, of course. "Is there anything on your mind? Other than the obvious," Iwaizumi asked. Yes. Yes there was. But, that was a secret. "No, just the whole volleyball thing, as well as my parents. Fuck, I'm nervous to talk to dad," Oikawa said, lying to Iwaizumi. He felt a tinge of guilt for lying, but he can't just say 'oh yeah, I'm in love with you', so... what else could he do? Oikawa sighed, and so did Iwaizumi. "Yeah, yeah. Fuck even I'm nervous to go with you and it's not even me who lost their career," Iwaizumi stated, but then immediately following it up with, "shit, sorry. Was that insensitive?" Iwaizumi scratched the palm of his right hand. Oikawa looked at the spiky haired boy sitting next to him, "nah, you're good." Short and sweet. Not like Oikawa. It was true Oikawa didn't feel offended by what Iwaizumi said, not at all, but the knot in his stomach was just sitting there, tightening when Iwaizumi said that. No, Iwa-Chan. I'm okay.
At this point they had been sitting there for a good 10 minutes, not really talking but enjoying each other's presence. It was about 8pm and the sky was already dark and filled with stars. Iwaizumi looked at Oikawa, and Oikawa looked back. "You can cry, y'know?" Iwaizumi said with a soft voice. Oikawa's eyes narrowed at Iwaizumi, and almost like it was on queue, tears started spilling out and he started to quietly sob. Iwaizumi grabbed onto his best friend, pulling him into a warm embrace. Oikawa hugged back. They sat there, hugging each other tightly. They sat there, Oikawa crying into Iwaizumi's shoulder, clutching onto him tightly. They stayed like that for about a half hour. Oikawa felt better once he was done, loosening his grip on Iwaizumi a bit. Iwaizumi was just stuck sitting there for half an hour, his best friend crying into his shoulder, but he didn't mind. This was okay. If anything, it made Iwaizumi happy that Oikawa was letting his emotions out, instead of bottling it up like usual. Iwaizumi smiled down softly at the brunette boy clutched onto him. "Sorry," Oikawa muttered. "Nah, it's cool. I'm glad you're not bottling it up." Oikawa looked up. "Yeah... me too." Oikawa gave a warm smile. "Should we head back?" Iwaizumi asked. "Yeah, yeah," Oikawa replied. Iwaizumi helped Oikawa up, and led him back to his apartment. Both went to bed happy, Oikawa not crying himself to sleep for the first time since that incident and Iwaizumi feeling like he made a difference. But, that wasn't the end of Iwaizumi's plan.
