Clutching the book, Kurapika ran down the hall to Rin's barracks. He frantically knocked on the door. He was crying again with desperation. He had found a survivor. He wasn't alone!
He wasn't alone!
"Rin..." He called to the door. Maybe she wasn't awake.
"Yes?"
Kurapika spun around, Rin was in pajamas, holding a glass of hot tea.Rin wiped her eyes before making eye contact with Kurapika.
"Are you okay?" She asked, tilting her head, "You look like you just saw a ghost."
I might as well just met a ghost, Kurapika thought
"Rin..." Kurapika choked out between silent sobs. It's all he could muster out.
"Yes?" Rin nervously giggled, approaching Kurapika, whose shaking legs collapsed beneath him. She sat facing him.
Kurapika, not saying a word, shoved the notebook into Rin's arms. Rin laughed a little, turning the first page, before dropping the book. Her breath picked up. With wide eyes, she lifted her head to look at Kurapika.
"Where did you-?" Rin began, Kurapika did all he could do then, and pointed at himself, "Kura...pika?"
Rin let out a gasp, followed by a loud sob, followed by more tears.
"You survived..." She breathed between cries.
Kurapika nodded and Rin engulfed him in a hug, almost knocking him over. She tightly gripped his shirt while sobbing into his shoulder, Kurapika repeating this. They cried for what seemed like forever. For Rin, years of guilt and isolation spilled out with every tear. It had been six years since she saw Kurapika last. They pulled apart and Kurapika ran a thumb over the scar on Rin's face, then to the place where her second braid would have been, but it looked like it had been chopped away, then gently brushed one of the two lavender earrings she still adorned herself with.
"You kept them..." He whispered.
Rin, still sobbing nodded, "Your eyes are different..."
"Contacts..." Kurapika said
"The future has... has been cruel... cruel to the both of us." Rin weeped.
The two Kurta embraced again.
"Is Pairo?" Kurapika asked, rubbing Rins back as she violently shook her head into his shoulder.
She couldn't tell him. Not now.
After more time of them (mostly Rin) crying on each other. Kurapika helped Rin to her feet. He wiped the tears from her face and patted her head.
"Though I spent the past however long crying on you," Rin began, a ghost of a smile on her face, "I'm still your superior."
"Naturally." Kurapika was taken aback by her quick recovery. How many times did Rin have to put on a strong face?
"So don't think for a second that I'll go easier on you during training."
"Never would've crossed my mind."
"I'll be tougher now that I know who you are." Rin giggled
"Of course."
"But..." Rin began, a face of disappointment painted her features, "Why would you lower yourself and become a Hunter?"
Rin knew the answer though. Most normal people who thought of hunting the Troupe, became Hunters. Most normal people hadn't been there to see most of her clan get ravaged by a group of demons. She had the advantage just by knowing that.
"Why did you become a Demon Slayer." Kurapika said, serious.
"The Phantom Troupe's members are mostly demons. I have more of a chance of defeating them like this." Rin said, voiding her face of emotion
"Then we even had the same goal after that day, huh." Kurapika softened.
"I guess so."
