Chapter 15
Why wouldn't he tell us this information? Melissa thought for the umpteenth time today. As they continued to look through the text messages, Melissa and Mr. James found a large amount of evidence that pointed to Wilbur and Michelle knowing each other on a deeper level. Even possibly having a relationship with one another. At this point they seemed to know each other for the better part of a year before the alleged rape.
What Melissa couldn't figure out was why wasn't Wilbur protecting himself? Why wasn't he giving out this information to his lawyers? Whether or not he wanted it to be mentioned in court; Melissa needed to know everything.
Melissa parked her car in front of Wilbur's parent's home. Mr. James was supposed to accompany her today, but got tied up with another attorney's work so Melissa had to go alone. She was hoping to discover more about Wilbur and Michelle's relationship that their text messages seemed to leave out. Because the two primarily used iMessage, most of the messages between the two of them was spotty and left out a lot of information. Majority of which was left wasn't incriminating evidence.
Melissa sighed and ran her hands along her steering wheel. Hopefully, she would get the answer to her main question today. She had also come to terms with the idea that the new revelation might not get to see the light of day in court. Through talking to Wilbur she hoped she could get more clarity on his relationship with Michelle; whether or not it would be off the record.
Melissa collected her purse and keys before starting down the walkway towards the home. Before she made it to the door, it opened. The woman behind the door hosted a smile on her face, but it did not reach her eyes. "Good morning Mrs. Augustin," Melissa greeted with a smile.
Wilbur did not resemble his mother at all. To his dark chocolate complexion his mother was caramel colored. To his deep brown eyes his mother had bright green hazel eyes. Mrs. Augustin looked far too young to have a child as old as Wilbur and yet he was her youngest.
Mrs. Augustin took a step back and welcomed Melissa into her home. "Good morning Melissa, thank you for stopping by today." She stated as she motioned Melissa inside.
"It's a pleasure. I was hoping to speak with Wilbur today."
"You should be able to. Have a seat and I'll go check to see if he's ready to talk." Melissa nodded and took a seat on the only sofa in the living room. It also housed two arm chairs on either side of the sofa. Melissa watched Mrs. Augustin climb up the stairs and come back with Wilbur shortly thereafter.
"Will you like anything to drink today, Melissa?" Mrs. Augustin asked, still standing, as Wilbur went around her.
"I'll have a water. Thank you." Melissa watched the woman disappear through an arch before her gaze turned to Wilbur.
"How are you doing today?" Melissa asked Wilbur as he sat down on the arm chair to the left of the sofa.
"I'm good." Wilbur answered as he got situated deeper into the arm chair. "How are you?"
"I'm good as well. This will be a short visit to discuss a few things that we found in your file that needs clarity. I want to make sure I'm representing you as best as I can, does that sound fair?" Melissa asked as Mrs. Augustin returned with a water bottle in hand. She graciously took it. When it seemed like Mrs. Augustin was going to sit in the opposite arm chair, Melissa stopped her. "Mrs. Augustin, I was hoping to speak with Wilbur alone today."
Her eyes flickered to Wilbur before returning back to Melissa. "Of course, of course. I'm sorry." Mrs. Augustin rose from her halfway seated position and made her way up the stairs to the other part of the house.
