Everyone thought James Potter was obsessed with Lily Evans, but that was far from the truth, she was merely a distraction.

It was true he was infatuated in the beginning, but that was six years ago, and Lily's constant rejections were getting to him.

With persuasion from Sirius and the gang, he has moved on. Countless girls were literally falling over themselves to date him now he'd moved on from Lily. Except the one he wanted.

The fact she didn't fawn over him drew him to her. He wasn't Sirius, he didn't want girls throwing themselves at him. He didn't want all the attention. He wanted a relationship. With her.

He thought she was amazing, she spoke her mind, she cared for others and her sarcastic remarks were hilarious. He couldn't get enough of her.

It wasn't like with Lily, he actually valued her opinion over her attention. He was dying to know what she thought, not just about him, but about everything.

So when he finally decided to ask her out after everyone thinking he was obsessed with Lily, he didn't expect a 'yes'.

But he got one. Now the pressure was on to create the perfect first date.

He had candles, rose petals, a table set up in the astronomy tower so they could watch the stars, something he knew she liked.

The date itself began at 7:30, it now being 7:25. Y/N was ready in her outfit, looking amazing, yet effortlessly so. She was sitting calmly in her dorm, waiting for James's signal.

James however, was stressing his ass off. "Padfoot?! Do I smell?" He shoved his armpit into Sirius's face, earning a grimace from the black haired boy. He groaned. "Urgh, it's too late to shower!" He grabbed the bottle of aftershave from his bedside and dowsed himself in it, resulting in a coughing fit from everyone present. From the corner, Remus put down his book, stood up and put his hand on James's shoulder. "Mate, you're going to be late. Stop stressing, you've thought about everything, what could possibly go wrong?"
"Well, the candles set something on fire, one of us slips on the roses, one of us falls off the tower, she's only doing this out of pity, I ask her to be my girlfriend and get rejected. The list goes on, really."

The clock in the common room struck 7:30, so James rushed to the mirror, attempting to smooth his hair once more, then out the door like a shot. Remus and Sirius stared after him, bewildered by the nervous James Potter.

Y/N sat, a little nervously now, waiting for James. Maybe he cancelled. Maybe it was a prank. She really hoped it wasn't, she'd likes James for a while now-who doesn't? There was a soft knock on the door, Lily coming to tell her that James was ready in the common room. Y/N stood up, ran her fingers down her outfit again to flatten it and made her way to the door. Getting half way down the stairs, she saw James at the bottom. His hair was as wild as always, his glasses slightly crooked, but no smirk or cocky grin in sight. He almost looked nervous. He was wearing a crisp white shirt, with the top two buttons undone, black fitted jeans and a black waistcoat, which all suited him perfectly. Upon hearing someone come down the stairs, James turned to be greeted with a spectacular sight. Y/N, with her hair perfectly done, her make-up making her eyes pop and her outfit highlighting everything to love about her. Angelic was the word that crossed James's mind.

By the time the pair had finished staring at each other, Y/N had reached the bottom step and James held out his hand for her to take." Where are we going?"
"Ah, it is a surprise, for me to know and for you to find out, which you will. Soon."" Okay... Lead the way then."

Making their way to the tower, everything was silent, James had bribed Peeves into staying at the other side of the castle to cause havoc that night, meaning no unwanted interruptions for the pair. Getting to the corridor that lead to the astronomy tower, Y/N turned the corner to see a magical sight. Candles were floating above them, bathing the corridor in a lush golden light. Rose petals fell slowly from the ceiling, creating a natural walk way, guiding her where she needed to go. Following them, she got to the bottom of the stairs for the tower, hearing soft music coming from above. Looking back at James, who just shrugged, she climbed the stairs, and had to stop in awe at the top.

Petals also littered the floor, candles again shining from above, but now there were ones on the floor too. Stacked in corners, the added to the golden light, making everything seem brighter. In the middle of the floor, there was a square table set for two. It had a white table cloth decorated with flowers and in the centre of the table was a vase of f/f. Unseen before, in the far corner was a record player, the source of the mysterious music. James led Y/N to her seat, gracefully pushing it in for her when she had sat down. Taking the seat opposite her, James saw all the wonder in her eyes and smiles to himself. She really did look beautiful. "Is this all for me," she whispered, not wanting to break the ambience of the place. "Yes, of course it is." James whispered back. " This must have taken ages to do!"
"Eh, it only took three days to figure out the spell for the roses."
"But why?"
"Why what?"
" Why go through all this trouble, learning a spell for three days, for me?"
James was astonished that she didn't understand how much she meant to him. Lily always rejected him and she was always there for him, and being blinded by determination, it took him a while to see her true worth to him. But he did see it.
"Because, you're amazing. Don't try and deny it! It's true! I was an idiot for six years, trying to get a girl to date me who obviously wasn't interested. That meant I missed the people who were interested. That meant I missed you. You were always there for me, helping me after Lily turned me down again. It took a while, but I finally realised I didn't need her. I need you. So, will you please be my girlfriend. Please."
Now it was Y/N's turn to be astonished. That speech was heartfelt, and she could see he was telling the truth, so it was no suprise to her when a small "yes." Slipped out of her mouth. James was surprised though, and it quickly turned to happiness. " Okay, great. Erm, great!"
Y/N giggled at his awkwardness. "Oh! Dinner! You basically think of what you want and it materialises onto the plate. I got these from the house elves."
"That is so cool!" They both thought of the meal they desired and it came. Eating, they exchanged conversation, both content with each others company.

When they had finished, James invited her to dance, and they spent the rest of the night doing so, kissing as the sun rose.

Four years later, Y/N came home from a long day at work to find rose petals all over the apartment. Candles formed lines, taking her where she was supposed to be, and in the sitting room, all the furniture had been replaced with a square table for two, with a white tablecloth decorated with flowers and a vase of f/f in the middle. James stood in black jeans and a waistcoat, waiting for her. Shrugging off her coat, Y/N asked, " what is this?" To which James's reply was to get on one knee and bring out a black velvet box. "Y/N, four years ago, I spent an amazing night with someone. Before that night, Sirius made me realise I was too good for Evans, I deserved better and I would eventually get it. And he was right, I got you. You are amazing, beautiful and perfect, I love you and I want to spend my life with you, so will you, Y/F/N marry me?"

Tears had appeared in both of your eyes, Y/N could tell the speech was heartfelt and truthful, just like on their first date, so again,it was no suprise when a small "yes." came out of her mouth.
