(AN: Remus is supposed to be like 25-28 and Y/N is 18; just depends how comfortable you are with big age gaps )
The new transfiguration teacher left half way through the year, saying he couldn't stand kids nowadays and it wasn't like when he was at school. Dumbledore was thrown into the deep end and only has the fortnight of the Christmas holidays to find a replacement. The only person available was Remus Lupin, a former student who had left a few years earlier. Sure he had no teaching experience - but really had any of the people Dumbledore hired?
So Remus got situated in the castle during the Christmas break, getting bored one afternoon and heading into Hogsmeade. The Three Broomsticks held a lot of memories for him and his friends, not of all them good. He slid into a booth, remembering how James had caused a fight there once, all the times he and Sirius had argued about his smoking habits just outside the window. His walk down memory lane was interrupted by a pretty server, asking what he wanted.
"I thought you ordered at the counter?"
She shrugged. "Yeah well it's slow and it's like 1pm it's more a restaurant than a crazy pub right now," she looked around at the practically dead room. "If you want I can go behind the bar and you can order." She sent him a cheeky smile. Remus felt warm, "no I'll just have a bowl chips please. And a coke. Please."
She wrote it all down, smiled again and walked away. He watched as she disappeared into the back, coming back empty handed and beginning to clear glasses from the bar. Two old men sat on the end, grumbling and nursing pints of lager.
"Here love, will you tell Jim here that the HolyHead Harpies are the superior team?"
"Absolutely not. Not only is it a lie but last time someone got involved in your spats Charles, you were both barred for a week."
"Aye well it's not my fault that stupid man thought muggle football was boring. "
"Jim you cannot help people's opinions! You didn't need to plant him one."
"Of course I did love, he was being cheeky."
She shook her head, laughing quietly. Remus gathered some courage and walked over. He was a grown man for crying out loud. He sat down opposite where she was cleaning glasses.
"So is your name love or do you have a proper one?"
She looked up, "I have a real one."
"What is it."
"Guess."
"Bertha?"
She wrinkled her face. "No? Denise?"
She shook her head.
" No, it's got to be prettier than that. A pretty girl like you should have a pretty name."
"I do have a pretty name. Y/N ."
"Well there you go, what did I say? Pretty name for a pretty girl."
"You don't flirt often do you?"
He panicked, "why, is it not going well?"
"Not really, you sound like an awkward old man. It's endearing, I get your point but you're absolutely shite at flirting."
He blushed. " I know- I think I've spoken to about three girls in my life- one of them is my nan." She chuckled again. "How about I start again? A second chance?"
"Okay one more chance."
He cleared his throat. "You're pretty, what's your name?"
"Better! Less subtle but better. It's Y/N. Y/N Y/L/N. And you are?"
"Remus Lupin." He held his hand out for a shake before stopping awkwardly. Y/N smiled and shook it. "Oh God I suck at this ."
" Not really, it's cute. Nice to know you're not a player anyways."
A bell dinged, and since Remus was the only person who ordered food he knew it was his chips. Y/N turned to get them and he made the split second decision of asking her when her break was. It was 3pm, another two hours. Until then, he ate his chips at the bar and they chatted. After her break, on which they walked down the snowy street and back, talking all the way, he sat in the same seat for the next three hours until her shift ended. They walked around Hogsmeade together, Remus loving listening to her talk about anything and everything. "It's getting dark, we should probably say goodnight." She looked at him, knowing he was right but being incredibly reluctant to say goodbye. "I don't want to say goodbye either."
"Are you a mind reader?"
He laughed. "Nope, you just wear your emotions on your face. I'm flattered that you look sad at the thought of leaving me so how about we go on a proper date?"
She laughed. "Now that Mr. Lupin was smooth!"
He chuckled too. "I'd like a second date a lot."
"Second date huh, is this the first?"
"Well I think when an attractive guy flirts with you, sits and waits for you to finish your shift and then walks with you for hours round a little freezing village that counts as some date behaviour."
Remus nodded, she had a point.
"So how about next Saturday, same time same place? I'll even wait for you to finish your shift again. But then I'll take you on a proper date. Somewhere warm."
She smiled again. "I'd like that." They said their goodbyes, and he watched her disappear up the high street before wandering some more, lost in the memories of his friends and the times they had spent in this little village.Eventually he returned to the castle, excited to get up and for it to be Saturday so he could see her again.
The sun definitely shone brighter the next morning, the clouds not deterring Remus from smiling his way through the corridors. Life couldn't get any better than this.
Except life got way way worse the second he entered his classroom.
Y/N Y/L/N sat in the second row. Wearing a Hogwarts uniform and a prefect badge.
Shit.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
Remus panicked. He couldn't exactly leave, he was the teacher! It was fine, they didn't do anything inappropriate. Oh God but he had flirted hadn't he. Still, he hadn't been physical and he didn't know.
"Good morning everybody, I am your new teacher. Professor Lupin."
He heard a squeak, from the second row and just knew it was her. He didn't dare look at her, didn't dare ask her a question until the hour was over. He couldn't ask her to stay behind that would be suspicious.
But she lingered of her own accord, saving him the awkwardness.
"Remus? Or Sir? Ah fuck which one do I call you?"
"Sir will do just fine."
She looked amused at that, but muttered an okay anyways.
She went to speak again but he cut her off. "How old are you?"
"18, as of three months ago."
He muttered out of relief, at least she wasn't a minor.
"How old are you?"
"Too old."
"Not necessarily."
He sighed. "Whatever last night was this new information changes things don't you think?"
"Not necessarily... Sir."
He glared at her. "You are young and impressionable, nothing happened and we will maintain a strictly professional relationship."
She nodded. "I leave in four months... Sir."
"Are you doing this on purpose?"
"Absolutely. You didn't mention you were a teacher. Nor that you were older."
"You didn't ask!"
"Neither did you! And you look about twenty so really that's your fault."
"Thank you? I think?"
"You're welcome. Sir."
"Enough Y/N. We need to put last night behind us and be what we are- teacher and student."
"Oh absolutely Sir. I'm sure you tell all your students they're pretty."
"Please don't make me sound like a pervert, I could lose my job over this!" He stepped around the desk. "I need you to understand that this is no laughing matter!"
"Oh I understand completely Sir. Honestly I do. I just find it so fucking hilarious that you are my teacher." She burst out laughing. "Oh my God! This literally can't get any worse. I mean what the hell are the chances of this!"
He stared at her, wondering if she was having some sort of breakdown. After a few moments she seemed to sober, her laughs subsiding. She drew up her shoulders and looked him square in the eye. "I promise you Sir that I won't tell a soul about last night and that whilst I am your pupil our relationship will be strictly professional. Cross my heart." He nodded, thanking her.She went to collect her bag, looking back at him. "Least I'll have something to look at in class now, something to motivate me."
"And what's that?"
"You promised me a second date, in four months I might just take you up on that offer. Sir."She left, and Remus stood in his room alone, wallowing in the fact he was completely and utterly fucked.
