"James was dead when I got there, lying on the floor, wand in hand, and I knew he had died trying to save what he loved most. You.

Your mum was still alive, barely. There was blood everywhere."

Flashback
I walked into their bedroom, the bed was neatly made, books stacked in orderly rows. Y/N's desk was shattered, fragments cutting her cheeks where she lay amongst the rubble, next to bookcase. "Siri?"
She slowly blinked, her breathing laboured. I sobbed her name, going to kneel next to her.
"James?"
"Oh Y/N he's gone I'm so sorry."
A broken sob escaped, tears and mascara flowing down her cheeks. Her perfect red lipstick was stained, blood trickling down to the floor. Her head was freely bleeding. I didn't know anything about Muggle medicine. I didn't know how to save her. "Harry." She whispered. I glanced over to the cot at the window, the baby pulling himself up to see his mother die. "He's never- hasn't - pulled himself before." She coughed and I soothed her, more tears making tracks down her face. "Take him, love him, save him Siri."
She really moved her hand, gesturing towards her bed. "Box-" she coughed again gasping, "memories, show him Siri."
I nodded, unable to speak with the agony clutching my throat. She grasped my hand, her other going to her stomach. "Sophie."
"Wha-what?"
"She was going to be Sophie."
That was it. She stopped breathing, her hand protecting her stomach and eyes watching her baby boy. I don't know how long I stayed, how long I sobbed over the woman who had saved me and made my best friend come to life like no other could.

Eventually I stood, placed her on her back and intertwined her hands, straightened her legs. She looked so peaceful, I would have thought she was asleep if it weren't for the blood. I wiped her mouth, restoring her signature perfect red lip look.

The window was open, blowing a chilling breeze onto the screaming child. I picked him up, his chubby little legs kicking and his red face screaming for his mother. I shushed him, holding him close to my chest. I would never be his mother, no one could ever be like her. But I made a promise to love this child. And by God I won't let her down.

James was still on the stairs, but Remus was standing over him, wand lighting the dark home.
"Sirius?"
His eyes joined mine, my sorrow reflected in his dark irises. "I made a promise, we have to look after Harry. "
"Of course," he nodded, "I couldn't imagine not given the circumstances."
"We have to put our petty differences aside, fight like adults, we talk it out, and we never storm off again." I jiggled Harry, he was getting restless in my arms.
"I promise, we're in this together, completely."
"Oh Remus." I started sobbing again, making Harry cry too.
"Siri, we have to get him out of here." I nodded, passing him Harry.  I looked at my best mate, his wife dead in their room upstairs. I shuffled up the stairs, glass cracking under my shoes. "Sirius? Where are you going?" I didn't answer, just walked over to Y/N, unclasping the necklace dangling from her pale neck.
I met Remus standing by the front door. " She would have wanted him to have this."
It was a heart locket, a moving picture of her and James laughing, him kissing her cheek in the snow. He nodded, and we sat on the garden wall, the cool air whipping against our numb skin.

Dumbledore turned up eventually. We knew he would. He knew this was going to happen. He had the power to stop it, but he didn't. I drew my wand, pointing at him threateningly. Remus couldn't stop me, he was holding Harry.

The old man stared at me, " go on Sirius, I deserve it. You certainly think so."
I lowered my wand. "No, I think it's better you live, live in the knowledge you could have saved them."
"Sirius, now is not the time." Remus shook my shoulder, bringing me back to reality.
McGonagall apparated, Hagrid soon following her. She ran into the house, coming out a few minutes later sobbing. Hagrid couldn't even bring himself to go in.
"Mr Black, mr Lupin. Take the child. You are his legal guardians after all. We shall wait for the ministry."
"No. I'm not leaving. I was here first, I will speak to the ministry."
