"Liv!" Sara's voice broke through the smoky haze of desire that had threatened to overwhelm me.
Immediately I opened my eyes and pulled back from Spencer, shocked that I had let it get so far. Spencer's eyes snapped open and looked past me at Sara with a frown of annoyance on his face. His hands were still encircling my waist, holding me against him and I wondered why his foreign touch didn't feel so strange anymore.
"It's Sam" She said, anxiety colouring her tone. I made a small movement away from his hands and he released me without a word. But I could still feel the warmth radiating on the surface of my skin, the lithe strength of his arms as he held me against him. I just wish I understood why it had felt so good.
"He's fighting Chris!" She cried impatiently. My eyes widened painfully and I felt myself being pushed out of the way. Spencer's eyes were hard and a muscle was jumping in his jaw as he strode towards the other room. I grabbed Sara's arm and pulled her along with me after him, not knowing what I would do when I came face to face with them.
The kitchen was swarming with people, so much so I could barely make the two boys out in the centre of the room. I watched in horror as Spencer pushed through the crowd of people to the two of them. Without hesitation, he took hold of Chris by the scruff of the neck (almost tearing his expensive polo shirt in the process) and threw to the floor with all of his might. I flinched when I saw the blood seeping from Sam's lip and decided I wasn't going to stand here and watch. In the back of my mind I knew I couldn't watch Chris get hurt either, but I tried hard to ignore it.
"Sara stay here" I said in an undertone.
"Liv?" She replied, worry lines deep in her forehead. My urgency clouded my thoughts, and I didn't stop to reply.
"Go and get some tissue" I ordered over my shoulder, shoving people out of the way to get through. Spencer had turned away from Chris, now talking to Sam in hushed tones, studying the damage to his face. What he didn't know was that Chris was recovering. Rubbing the back of his head, his face was twisted in pain, but there was another emotion that I didn't like. Humiliation. Somehow I knew that any boy who'd been put on the floor wasn't going to stay down for long. Before I knew what I was doing I burst in the way of the two boys:
"Spencer look out!" I cried, but he didn't have time to react. I was in between the two boys before either of them could realise. Chris rose from the floor with the force of a bullet and went for Spencer like a battering ram. Caught in the middle, it wasn't Spencer that recieved the force of Chris's shove, but me.
The air was completely knocked out of me, and I hit the floor with a loud smack. There was a sharp intake of breath from the people in the kitchen as I gasped in pain. Chris's confused, intoxicated gaze found mine and I glared at him without reservation. In that moment making him feel guilty didn't feel like the worst idea.
"Liv!" Spencer shouted, struggling against Sam's iron clad grip. Sam's face was contorted from the effort, but Spencer was oblivious. For the first time since I'd met him I saw what everyone else saw. I saw a boy who was both handsome and charming, but that this could change at the flip of the switch. And it happened that this switch was Sam being hurt.
"Too afraid Yates?" Chris taunted and I knew no matter how strong Sam appeared to be; he wasn't going to hold back Spencer any longer. Sam glanced at me, eyes filling with anger.
Sam leaned over and spoke some words into Spencer's ear, some words that sounded remarkably like: 'Punch that pretty face of his'. Spencer sprung out of his grip like a coiled spring, but Chris was expecting it and they grappled violently, neither of them gaining the upper hand. Hurt and disappointment flowed through my veins like ice. For some reason it wounded me that it was more important to him to hit Chris than to make sure if I was okay.
