Chapter 12- Nothing ever goes to plan
It was all going swimmingly until now, Spencer had been making us all laugh with a story of his drunken exploits (where Sam was unfortunately the butt of the joke). We were well into our eight drink and I was beginning to feel a little unsteady. Lana had been easy going and funny: trying a little bit too hard, but I'm sure it was only me who noticed. She was stood on the other side of Spencer, laughing heartily at what he was saying. My earlier hope that they could somehow get on had now fully taken flight. It was only my slight disappointment that Sam and Sara won't going to join us that could have dampened my spirits.
That is until I spotted Lisa at the other end of the bar, surrounded by her friends, and my heart sank like a lead weight. I shrunk down closer to Spencer so she wouldn't be able to see me. He glanced at me, but didn't register.
"Look what the cat dragged in" Lana said, loud enough for her to hear.
"Lana" I hissed, and watched as Spencer's nose scrunched up in disgust at her. Noah on the other hand appeared notably confused.
"What?" She retorted. "She's a bitch" She concluded.
My eyes were locked onto her for any confirmation that she had heard. As if she could feel my panic, she looked round and glared at Lana like she would set her alight with hatred if she could.
I kept my eyes to the floor, but my act of complete surrender wasn't enough to satisfy her.
"Tell your friend to keep her mouth shut Liv. We wouldn't want a repeat of the other day now would we?" She asked dangerously.
My cheeks flamed, mortified and I opened my mouth to speak instantly. Lisa had the effect on me that no-one else did: she rendered me speechless. I could feel Spencer's eyes on me, his anger, like the searing touch of his hand on my cheek .
"I didn't think so" She said, triumphant and smug in equal measure.
"Why don't you back off and stop being such a stupid bitch?" Spencer snarled savagely.
If the last encounter with Chris was a picture, then her face now was another level. Her eyes were rounded with shock and there was an unfamiliar, but not altogether unsatisfactory expression of confusion.
"I don't see that it's got anything to do with you Spencer" she smirked, barely recovering herself.
"If you touch her again, it will be everything to do with me. I don't care if you're a girl" He snapped. Her eyes flashed dangerously, but her face betrayed no emotion. I waited with baited breath for her reply, but no words came out.
She looked at me one more time: just a glance of her beautiful and terrible eyes, before she flounced off with her friends in tow. It was a triumph of sorts, but underneath it all I felt sick. I wasn't annoyed at anything but the fact that Lisa seemed to know Spencer a lot more than I thought she did.
"I don't need you to get involved Spencer" I cried in a voice that wasn't my own, it was quiet but insistent.
His arm, placed previously so close to mine, moved away like it had touched a hot plate.
"Oh? Because you were handling it so well on your own" He drawled.
I looked away because looking at him was like staring at the clouds before it rained. It encouraged inevitable happenings. And right now, in my humiliated and frustrated state of mind: the inevitable was my tears.
