Chapter 10- Unexpected

"What injury were you and your Dad talking about the other day?" I asked. I collapsed into the sofa, feeling overwhelmingly tired all of a sudden. Spencer sunk into the seat next to me, frowning. I don't know why I had even referenced the fiasco, but it was something I'd been curious about.

"I was playing football, and this guy comes out of nowhere and gets me right in the shin" Spencer explained, eyes glazing over slightly as he remembered it. Subconsciously his left hand had reached down and touched his leg: where the epicentre of the pain must have been. Without thinking I look down at it too, never having considered Spencer would ever be injured. He always seemed invincible to me, like nothing could touch him.

"Right there" He repeated. "And that was it. I wasn't going to go professional anymore, in fact I was lucky I could play at all. I had physio for a couple of months and they kept telling me to keep playing, but I just didn't love it anymore" He mumbled and I could see what it cost him to talk about it.

"That's shit" I said honestly. "And Ryan plays too?" I prompted. Again, I didn't know why I was prolonging the conversation when he clearly wanted to change the subject so desperately. I was too curious about him to resist.

"Sorry am I asking too many questions?" I asked hurriedly before he could answer.

A smirk played around his lips. "It's fine. It's nice for it not to be me asking the questions for once" He joked.

"I don't know why you ask me questions. I'm really not that interesting" I said.

He frowned. "That's your opinion" He scoffed. I tried hard not to look pleased.

I rolled my eyes playfully. "Nah it's fact. Didn't I tell you Spence? I was cursed as a child: I'm now extraordinarily dull for the rest of my life" I drawled sarcastically.

His mouth twitched, but he played along. "Not when you have a drink you're not" He retorted.

"Ah" I said. "You've found the loophole" I quipped.

He laughed and I realised something. "We were having a normal conversation before you distracted me" I pouted.

He gave me a shove. "Yes Ryan still plays as Dad likes to constantly remind me" He said darkly.

"Do you miss it?" I dared to ask, voice coming out timid and shaky. Part of me knew I should avoid asking him about his Dad.

He heaved a sigh. "Sometimes, but mostly no. I loved it more before it became a career plan" He said reasonably.

I smiled. "What are you going to do instead?" I asked.

He smirked. "So many questions Liv. What's got you in such a good mood?" He asked.

"I'm always in a good mood when you're around" I said playfully.

He snorted. "Are you on drugs?" He asked.

I laughed. "No!" I cried.

He bit his lower lip and stared at me. "You're being too nice to me" He stated.

I rolled my eyes. "I'm always nice" I said like I was insulted. "Now shut up and tell me about your life plan" I ordered.

He chuckled dryly. "Fine. Well the usual I suppose: go to uni, get a job, get married. Then have loads of mini Spencer children. Sorted" He said.

I glared at him. "You're an idiot. I meant: what do you want to be?" I asked, trying hard to hide a smile.

"And the world already has you and Ryan, anymore of you and it would implode" I added sardonically.
