Bucky stared at her through the glass of the cell. He waited for her to say the words. If he was being honest with himself, he was a little nervous too. He hadn't heard the words in almost two years, but he hoped nothing would happen.
Melany took a deep breath, speaking in Russian. She took pauses between each of the words. "Longing. Rusted. Seventeen." She kept her eyes on Bucky who was unfazed. "Daybreak. Furnace. Nine." His fists clenched, and he tilted his head down slightly, but nothing else changed. "Benign. Homecoming. One. Freight car." She stopped, keeping her gaze on him.
He watched her for a moment. "Still me." He furrowed his brow. "Open the door."
It felt like a huge weight was lifted off Melany's shoulders as she let out a huge sigh and unlocked the cell. He pulled open the door, walking over to her. "Feel better?" He asked, reaching out to her.
"Yes." She breathed, taking him in for a hug.
He smiled, wrapping his arms around her. "Good. No more being bipolar with me." He jabbed her side slightly, making her laugh.
She pushed his shoulders but he held on tight, wanting to keep hearing her giggle. "God..." He started to say as he looked at her. His arms remained locked around her waist as her hands pressed against his shoulders, trying to push him away.
"Buck!" She groaned, knowing she wouldn't be able to get out of his grip.
"What?" He asked, looking down at her and into her eyes.
"Let go!" She smiled, continuing to laugh softly.
"As you wish." He let go without warning, causing her to fall. She groaned as she hit the ground on her back. He chuckled, knowing she was okay. "Get off the floor. You look like a fool." He teased.
She pushed herself up on her elbows. "I look like a fool?" She smiled, standing back up. She rolled her eyes, turning away from him. She walked out of the confinement area, and back into the main lobby of the compound.
She heard the thud of Bucky's boots following close behind. She glanced behind her, seeing he was rather close. She bit the inside of her cheek as she started walking faster, running up the stairs. Bucky noticed her playful behavior, running after her. He jumped up the flight of stairs, landing in front of her.
She yelped when she saw him land. She covered her face, falling again into a fit of laughter. "I forgot about the serum." She groaned, flinging her head back, causing her hair to fly around her.
He chuckled when she looked back at him. "You're adorable." He smiled, biting his lip. He leaned over, placing a kiss on her cheek.
He froze when he quickly pulled away. "I..." He started to speak. Melany stared back at him, her eyes wide as well. Her lips were parted slightly. "I'm sorry." He backed away from her.
"Don't be." She sputtered out quickly. "It's fine."
"It's not. You're with Steve." He sighed. He pinched the bridge of his nose. "It's probably a good thing Steve is coming back tomorrow." He looked down, turning around and walking into his bedroom, leaving her on the steps.
A pit grew in her stomach. She knew she was with Steve but the past week with Bucky has been amazing. They've opened up to each other, Bucky is actually no longer the Winter Soldier. He was her friend. She was one of his only friends.
She sighed, trying to get rid of the pit that had begun to head to her throat. She walked into her room. She locked the door, having a feeling he would try to come in soon, or later that night. She didn't want him to see her.
She felt tears in her eyes. She wasn't even sure why she was upset. She's with Steve, and nothing Bucky did was wrong. She let tears fall as she curled herself up in her darkroom, falling asleep quickly.
