Prelims had been hanging over your head for weeks now, but nothing gave you as much stress as the real thing.
You remembered back to what Asahi had told you one day as you walked home. "If you remember something even scarier, nothing on the court will ever seem scary again."
That tactic somewhat worked for you, but what you found was that it was better for you to go the opposite way. Every pass, you thought of the way that Asahi's hand felt in yours. For every serve, you thought of how his arm felt slung over your shoulder.
You hadn't gone out for a day like you did that one day again. Both of you wanted to, but you were simply far too busy to get any time outside of your usual after practice situations.
The most interesting development leading up to prelims was both of your teams finding out about you and him and your growing bond. The boys found out when the other third years on his team decided to follow him as he left due to their growing suspicions. Unluckily for you two to try and hide the truth, you had had a bad practice that day and almost as soon as Asahi walked through the gym he buried you in an embrace.
"You got this, ace," he said softly as you felt his hand rest on the back of your head, stroking your hair just a little bit. "I know you're going to leave everything on that court. It's going to be okay-"
That's when another voice spoke up. "So, this is Asahi's little secret!"
You had quickly learned that the other boys' names were Daichi and Sugawara. The one who had yelled initially was Suga, and he had already apologized for ruining your guys' moment. Both of you were blushing more than you ever had when with each other, including the time you had first taken Asahi's hand.
"So, are you guys together then?" Daichi asked nonchalantly.
Your eyes shot to the ground as Asahi started stumbling over his own words as if he had no control of his tongue. "Well- I mean we haven't really- well, we haven't really been talking for that long. I mean I- Well, (y/n) is really cool-"
They both started laughing seeing your guys' reactions. It was quickly dismissed after that, but Asahi's words in his panic still made you smile a little. It seemed like he was almost drifting towards wanting to say yes. You wanted to say yes more than anything, so maybe he was thinking the same way.
The memory of that night was enough to keep you smiling during warm ups. Part of your job was to be confident and upbeat, right?
That's when the game started and you felt everyone's mentality slipping. The team you were facing first was known to be strong, and your team was quite the opposite.
Word of your strength had spread, but it was usually followed by something along the lines of, "But the rest of her team isn't very good." Every one of those comments made you want to smack the other teams, along with the many comments about your height and stature.
