4 | Look, I tried not to hit her

I was wrong when I fought back to Kate. I shouldn't have slapped her.

I should've punched her and knock her out. I'd really feel better if I see her nose broken.

Lyla walked beside me through the school halls, her head low and her eyes distant.

I just told her about the wind in the café. She didn't call me crazy yet or even given me the look that I expected. I didn't want to ruin that by telling her about the shadow men and my talk with Astrum.

"Sky," Lyla said. "Don't you ever think that we're wrong too?"

I raised my brow. "What do you mean?"

"Well, I lied about Kate to a teacher. I know she did that to you but if we already know it's bad, why did I still do it to her?"

I thought for a moment. Lyla always had that moral philosophy stuff she and Ryan uses to keep me from trouble. It always confused me.

"Look, it's justice I guess." I said. "They did something wrong to us, we do something to make them pay for it. You know, like a . . . criminal who goes to jail or, paying your meals."

Her brows knitted together.

"I mean, forget the last part. What I'm trying to say is that you have to balance things out. Sometimes, it means doing something bad for a good cause."

She went silent and I was afraid that she'd give me a long speech, explaining why I'm wrong but she just said "That's called revenge. Is revenge good?"

Luckily, I didn't have to answer that.

"Hey, am I interrupting anything?" Chelsea asked, putting her arm around my shoulders. Her being taller than me made me feel five times smaller.

"No." Lyla answered.

"Great! So, you guys want to join me to the arcade today?"

"Sorry," I said. "I already have plans."

I'd love to say that my plan was to stay alive and destroy shadows.

"Aww,"

"Yeah, maybe some other time."

She pouted. "Bummer. . . Lyla?"

Lyla sighed. "I'd love to but I still have a lot of homework to finish, not to mention the project due on Thursday. Sorry."

"Nah, it's ok. I get it. You guys are busy." She chuckled, letting go of me.

We continued walking to the exit. That's when I see men in black suits standing around the villainess trio. They think that they can scare me and that they could just beat me up or something.

Heh, they should really get a life. . . and a brain.

"Why don't you ask Ashley?" Lyla asked, still not noticing.

"She doesn't like stuff like that."

"Did you ask her though?"

"She bought a new book yesterday. She went home early too."

I smiled as they continued with their conversation. Alani is already squinting at me. Casey seems to be telling Kate that we're coming. Kate scowls and turns to my direction.

They started walking over to us. Chelsea and Alani stopped talking. We walked faster.

Lyla tensed. Her lips were in a straight line, her brows crossed and she gripped the straps of her backpack.

I don't blame her. She wouldn't even be in this mess if she wasn't such a good friend to me.

Chelsea held onto Lyla's shoulders and placed her between us. I'm grateful for that. Chelsea was the kind of person who'd definitely fight you if you cross her.
