Chapter 9:
Beep.
Beep beep.
Beep.
Beep beep.
Beep.
Where was I?
I saw blackness. Wasn’t I supposed to be in the clouds or you know, at a gate or something? Or was I in hell? Oh gosh what did I do?
“Ember, open your eyes.” I heard faintly. Inferno? Where am I?
“In the crossing of life in death, basically. This is called Middel, in old english.” Nate answered behind me. I groaned.
“So basically I’m in a coma?” I asked.
“Yes.” Nathan answered. Why couldn’t I just die? Seriously, how many times can I die? I turned around to face Nathan.
“What am I supposed to do now? Just awaken?” I questioned. Nathan snorted.
“It’s not that simple. You can’t just ‘wake up’. You have to seek your inner peace, as much as it sounds like Kung Fu Panda, it’s not baloney.” Nathan replied seriously. I broke out laughing. I sobered up quickly realizing Nathan was really serious.
“Wait, so this movie is real?” I asked. That would be so cool if it was.
“No, just the inner peace part.”
“And you’re expecting me to do it? Woah, woah, woah, slow down. I’m supposed to learn kung fu?”
“Somewhat to a degree.”
“What does that mean?”
“You’ll see. Just sit down. There, that’s right. Now, close your eyes,” I closed my eyes, “now think of peace. Think of drawing your energy to heart of your heart.”
I did as he said and I accomplished this weird feeling of serenity, as in suddenly I became wiser.
Suddenly, I was drawn to another world. I opened my eyes to see Nathan wasn’t there anymore. Grass swayed in the wind, cherry trees dancing around. Leaves from the cherry tree were blown away, creating a dazzling affect of awe.
“Ah, young grasshopper. I see you have come.” I heard an old man muse behind me. I turned my head around, seeing the typical old asian man with a long beard and a staff that is often represented in movies. Automatically, deep respect form in me.
I stood up, facing him. I bowed my head and lifted it up to meet his gaze. Now that I was really facing him, he looked startlingly familiar.
“Your body knows me, but your mind does not remember. It is time for you to remember with the heart, body, and mind.” He said.
“What is your name?” I asked. His eyes twinkled with amusement.
“You will find out soon enough when you remember.” The old man replied and turned around, walking away. I stared, dumbfounded. “Are you going to stay there all day?”
I hurriedly got up, and followed him.
We have reached a cave, and the old man welcomed me warmly inside. I smiled, and followed him inside. I was amazed. There was a fire burning with a polished table. The table had two chairs. Vines grew in on the ceiling like a decoration. What resembled like fridge stood along the side with a stove.
There were natural doorways that led to rooms and even bigger rooms. This was better than living in a mansion!
“Sit down.” The man warmly said. I sat in one of the chairs, admiring the engravings on the table. I traced my hand over it. A wooden plate was set before me, with two straight sticks as utensils. The man sat down across from me. “Eat.”
I hesitantly grabbed the two sticks, and my hands immediately knew what to do with it. On my plate was what looked like sushi. I grabbed it with the sticks, and lifted it up.
“What is this?” I asked. The man grinned.
“If you’re talking about the food, it’s sushi. The utensil you are using, it is called chopsticks.” The man replied. I nodded my head. Interesting. I shoved the sushi in my mouth, chewing it. It was a combination salmon, avocado, and rice.
Damn, this is good.
I ate it all, and soon was full. I looked up to see the old man’s eyes twinkling with amusement.
“I’ll a guess that you like it.” He commented.
“Yes sir.” I said.
“Just call me Bob for the meanwhile.” I guffawed.
“Anything.. but.. Bob!” I managed to get through fits of laughter.
“Would you rather call me Fred?”
“I guess Bob is a name we can start with if I can’t remember your real name.”
“Whatever you say.”
“So, ah, Bob, how would I know you? There is no other way I could unless I was in a coma in a young age.”
“It is because you have forgotten. Do you remember anything at the age of ten?”
“Yeah, being bullied.”
“Anything other?” I pondered. At the age of ten, all I remember was being bullied and it got all misty, as if my mind was locking up something
“It gets misty. It’s like my mind is locking up information I desperately want to grasp.” Bob stared at me as if he just saw a dinosaur, with caution and a hint of fear. Calling him Bob really felt weird, misplaced.
“That’s not possible. That could not have happened.” Bob declared gravely. I lifted an eyebrow.
“You’ve been put on a spell,” Bob said sourly, “and whoever has done it didn’t want you to remember what you saw. I’d guess it would be that Taylor boy of yours.”
Once I heard his name, I suddenly remembered what happened. A sense of betrayal washed over me.
“There is more to Taylor than what meets the eyes. You see, you have a half sister. Taylor and her were in love with each other at the young age of ten. Then, Taylor and her were attacked. She died and Taylor went into a coma soon after.”
“What’s her name?” I asked.
“Illana.”
“How was she like?”
“She is a cunning fox. Be careful, she will take Taylor away from you.” At the though of some girl who was my half sister taking away Taylor made me growl.
“What do you mean by that?” I asked.
“She will seduce him and manipulate him. The truth is, she never really died. She was abducted and grew up in evil. Now she feels that Taylor is her’s to keep. I’d say, trying to kill yourself was quite a move. Taylor is becoming more attached to you.”
“How about Nate? Will I turn out to like him as I do with Taylor?” Bob barked with laughter.
“Of course not. You two are just best friends that play around a lot, as if with Inferno, he’s like a brother with you.” I smirked. How Inferno would think I replaced him. “Besides, you killed yourself for no reason. Taylor was trying to be polite to that girl by laughing along with her.”
“What about ‘mistake’?” I asked bitterly.
“He didn’t mean that.”
“Psh, how would you know? You’re speaking for him.” Bob tilted his head dangerously.
“What makes you think I don’t know?”
“What make you think that I know what you know?” I said in a cool voice.
“I didn’t say that.” Bob replied,
“Point made.” I ended, smirking victoriously. Bob shook his head while grinning. He muttered something under his breath, but I didn’t hear it.
I laid in bed, thinking about the events of today. I have to prove something to get out of this. What is it really?
