Chapter Ten:

“In the harsh reality of the storm, you must learn how to be unaffected by it!” Bob hollered over the roaring thunder. I flinched at every raindrop. You see, rain and I didn’t really mix together. I groaned.

“You don’t see that the rain and I are enemies?!” I yelled. Just as I said ‘enemies’, the rain poured harder. Ugh. Bob shook his head slowly, and mouthed something.

“Follow me!” Bob shouted. He bounded over the field, the wind blowing against us. I ran after him, with the feeling of being smacked in the face.

We arrived at a lake (how was that even there?). Bob gestured for me to get in. Are you kidding me? I reluctantly got in after Bob sent me a sharp glare. The water enveloped me, with it’s icy cold chill sending chills down my spine.

I held my breath and dived under, or at least what kinda looked like diving, and swam under. I opened my eyes, and the whole lake was clear. Not a drop of pollution or salt. My eyes weren’t stinging like they would when I would be on Earth.

This is freaking awesome. What looked like grass swayed under, the pebbles and rocks laying there silently. I swam, awestruck. That was until I felt something grasp my foot. I looked back, see my foot was wrapped in a vine that kept spreading down my leg to trap me.

“OH NO!” I screamed, but bubbles and a muffled sound came out. Where’s Bob when I need him? Dang. Realization dawned to me. I’m going to drown! Oh no, oh no, oh NO!

I desperately tried to make my way up the surface, but the vine-plant was pulling me back. I let out bubbles in desperation as oxygen was leaving my lungs. I was going to die. Wait, how do I die in a coma?

No air left. I tried holding my breath longer, but I had to give up. I had my first feel of what it was like to breathe water. I breathed it in again, and finally I blacked out.

                                   ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

That floating feeling evaded me. As if was in the clouds. Through my eyelids, I could the orange hue of the-sun-in-your-eyes-when-they-are-closed. Was I in heaven? I opened my eyes, seeing I was staring at the sun through water. This was not heaven. This was waking up after you just died.

I recalled the last events.

What the?

I unconsciously gasped in, and I felt water flowing my lungs, but it felt like oxygen. When I breathed in I felt like I was in a box with constantly flowing oxygen. It’s a weird feeling.

Am I a mermaid? Someone please explain why I can breathe underwater. Nathan, where are you? Aren’t you supposed to be some annoying thought-stalker? Hello? Um, okay...?

Why is this like the lava incident? I drowned in lava, now I drown in water. What am I, a wolf with nine lives? That would actually be an interesting story...

I attempted to swim to the surface, but a vine was stuck around my leg. Oh, yeah. That.

The vine was thin, but thick enough that it wouldn’t break if you desperately struggled with it.

I wrapped my hands around the a strand of the vine and yanked it with all my strength. Which was a lot, by the way.

The vine was torn off from my knee, and I worked down my leg. Once the vine was completely untangled from my leg, I swam off away from “The Vine of Death.” Hmm... That sounded really dramatic.
