Chapter 14

It was over a month later when Mia had finally had enough of choosing a partner for herself. Every time she chose the wrong one Cupid only grew smugger, and it made both fury and despair at ever finding a man engulf her.

She came to the sinking heart realisation that she'd have to admit her problem, which would probably make the God even more sickeningly smug. They would have to work together if she was ever going to find a man.

Working with Cupid wasn't really what she wanted. He was a huge distraction with his perfection forever surrounding her. The reminder of their kiss was never far from her mind whenever she glanced at his lips.

He'd drop that grin on her or flick his hair and she couldn't think straight. She knew that he knew that too, which was why he always flaunted himself. It frustrated her that she responded to it each time he made any gesture.

Cupid knew his charm and he knew how it affected any woman with a heartbeat. Spending more time with him would lead her into aggravated arguments and remembering that kiss a lot more frequently.

It wasn't good for her sanity to spend an abundance of time with Cupid. The trouble was that it could be the only way she'd find a man.

"That one acted like a keeper," Cupid drawled as he came up beside Mia, and watched the drunken man falling all over the bar.

"His profile didn't suggest alcoholism in any way," Mia tried to defend her choice, but knew that it was a useless endeavour.

"As Bevan's never once suggested he was a part of a cult," Cupid pointed out.

"How can I have all these matches that are so damn crappy?" she waved her arms in the air.

"Don't look my way. If it's anyone's fault, it's your own. No human I've ever known has had millions of possible choices, only you. Therefore, you are the only one I can blame."

Mia tried hard to stifle the fury that wanted to bubble up and start arguing with Cupid. He'd deliberately provoked her right now. She dragged in a deep breath and then gritted her teeth.

Cupid continued his stupid cocky smile at her, knowing that she couldn't deny his words. Sometimes she hated him so deeply that she wanted to pound her fists into him, but it wouldn't help her.

Mia knew she'd have to bite the bullet and tell him. She'd have to agree to more time in his dimension pouring over even more useless bits of paperwork. They needed to cooperate, and it wasn't going to be easy.

"Obviously, as individuals, we're having no luck in our choices. I think, as much as I don't want to say it, that we need to work together," Mia reluctantly admitted.

When she saw his jaw drop open, she wasn't sure what she'd said that was so shocking. Hadn't he thought it was a much better use of their time and resources? Surely, he could see that it was the only way to get rid of her.

"That's your solution?" Cupid finally spluttered.

"Yes."

"If you come into my dimension, I don't want any griping about my surroundings. Do we understand each other?" Cupid crossed his arms.

"Ugh, fine. Let's try and do a proper truce. That means nobody says anything bad about the other person or their surroundings," she bartered.

"I guess I can restrain myself. Shall we go? He can figure out his own way home," Cupid waved an arm to her useless date.

"Yes, there's definitely no future with that guy," Mia screwed up her face.

Before she had readied herself, Cupid had scooped her up, spread his wings and started to fly. Mia's startled exclamation vanished into the dense air of the bar as they changed dimensions. Not a single person noticed her disappearance, not even her date who had started gulping down another drink.
