Chapter 19

Mia couldn't drag her eyes away from that portable Match-a-Matic. None of this made any sense. All she had wanted was a man and now Cupid wanted to insist that she was him. What the heck was going on?

"You've got to see it, surely? The cherubs come to you. My Holidaze has returned to its original state and all because of you. I've seen you use my arrows, and you know which ones to choose. The most important thing is that you matched that couple with no hesitation, and you matched them correctly," Cupid ticked the items off on his fingers.

"I matched them because that was the deal I made with her," Mia pointed to the woman having dinner and delightful banter with the man Cupid had tried to set her up with.

"We shall go and discuss this with the Higher Gods, who I know have wanted me out of the job for a while now," Cupid replied.

As usual, Cupid didn't give Mia a chance to protest. With her still touching his arm, he spread his wings and delivered them back to the Holidaze. A whirlwind later and Mia stood within the new and improved love Holidaze, still trying to argue her point.

"What's going on?" Devinah asked as she saw Cupid's grim expression and Mia's confusion.

"You've finally got your way and there's a new God of Love," Cupid declared.

Mia shook her head wildly, "no, I'm not!" she protested.

"She not only touched my arrows, but she used them, and they worked."

Devinah froze and stared between Cupid and Mia, "no way."

"Yes, I checked the matching, and they were meant to be."

"That was nothing but a fluke. The woman wanted to be a match to that guy, it was a part of the deal we made when she pretended to be me," Mia tried to explain.

Her argument dried up the very moment the world started to shake around them. Cupid dragged in a deep breath and knew that his time had arrived. It was time to say goodbye to his easy existence. The Higher Gods were bound to punish him for his lack of action. He had to wonder if they knew all of this when they last had their little chat of warning to him.

"What's going on?" Mia exclaimed, as she clutched at the nearest object to stay upright.

Living in Australia, she'd never experienced an earthquake before, but she had to wonder if this was one. Everything shimmered around her as well as shook, it was as if glitter rained down upon them.

"You're about to receive your new career," Cupid said with a long, pitiful sigh.

"You're crazy!"

In his usual snit, Cupid didn't answer her. He stood with a mournful expression on his face that Mia didn't understand.

The shaking stopped, but the glitter shrouded air had started to glow. Mia glanced around when everything went hushed and still. The cherubs started to hum as they gathered around Mia and Cupid.

"I thought the cherubs didn't say anything," Mia enquired to fill the empty void where there was only humming.

"They know who's coming," Devinah said in a bare whisper.

Mia blinked and when she reopened her eyes, she couldn't hide her astonishment. The glitter had settled on three larger than life beings. They weren't quite human with the way their skin glowed with iridescence and they stood taller than any person Mia had ever met. There was an unworldly nature to the shape of their heads and the proportion of their bodies.

The beings stood opposite Mia, Cupid and Devinah. Their billowing robes flowed in a golden swirl of fabric while the faces were both ancient and worldly.
