Chapter 16
Mia tried to keep her anger in check by the time Cupid returned for her. As it took him the whole day, it was a lot of effort required on her part.
He hadn't enjoyed explaining why he had acted the way he did to the human population, but he had told her. Cupid had entrusted her with incredibly sensitive information. It was stuff that upset him, and she could see his side of it.
For Mia, she could now understand why he became so uncaring and why he had to push his feelings aside. On the other side of that, he was the God of Love and should have more control over his emotions.
She even understood why he had left so abruptly. Mia had badgered him about his responsibility to the human dimension and it had only annoyed him more. No matter what she did it always managed to upset the God of Love.
Mia sat in the sun warming her face and enjoying the heat that surrounded her when Cupid made his reappearance. Forcing herself to stay calm, Mia faced him and gave him a firm look.
"You took your time in getting back here," she said lazily.
Cupid, who had obviously braced for her tirade, eyed her suspiciously. Mia raging against him would've been much easier to deal with. A calm Mia worried him just the tiniest little bit.
He had gotten to know this woman over their months spent together, even if he didn't want to. Calmness was never a good sign from someone with such a temper. She had one of the worst tempers he'd ever seen in a human. Nothing but a gorgeous, volatile mass once she got going.
There he went again thinking about how good she looked. He hated himself for noticing anything about her. Random thoughts were always going through his mind about this woman. He had tried to tell himself it wasn't anything, but he knew deep down that it was.
"You're lucky that I came back at all," he drawled as he tried to rile her up.
"Hah! You knew that I'd start writing letters again if you didn't return," she said with a grin.
"You're stubborn."
In truth, Cupid hadn't even thought about those letters. Once his guilt had kicked in over abandoning her, he had hurried back. He also hated himself for the way he rushed to her. Only he knew how weak it showed him to be, or at least that's what he told himself. Cupid knew that Devinah saw it too, especially when she gave him a knowing smirk.
"Yes, fear of letters definitely sent me back here," Cupid said with a small shake of his head.
"Right," Mia said as she crossed her arms.
"Can we just go?" Cupid reached out a hand to her.
"Are you telling me you're not angry at me anymore?" Mia asked and Cupid dropped his hand.
"I am a God and I feel no anger," Cupid declared.
Mia rolled her eyes, "admit you're a God who occasionally gets angry and then we'll return to the date hunt."
"Oh, please, let's just get on with it."
"Why can't you admit it?" she eyed him.
"I'm about to leave you here again," Cupid threatened.
"Alright, in the beginning you found me frustrating, and you can't deny that."
As usual, Cupid didn't answer but manhandled her instead. In the blink of an eye, Mia found herself back in the Holidaze. Her provoking of Cupid hadn't gotten her anywhere. Now he'd started carrying her around like a sack of potatoes. If it hadn't thrilled her so much, she may have made a protest.
