Chapter 23

Mia hadn't expected how much the cherubs could celebrate until she woke up the following morning. She found herself snuggled up against Cupid's side with his arm wrapped around her securely. Together they took up the heart shaped throne comfortably embraced.

Drawing in a breath, Mia took a moment to appreciate having Cupid's presence surrounding her. His delightful intoxicating aroma mesmerised her. The way he held her as if she was a delicate flower made her heart race.

She noticed that her wings wrapped around him as his wrapped around her. The intimacy of the moment surpassed any that she had experienced before. She revelled in it and allowed herself an instance to be in the moment without Cupid's knowledge.

"As comfortable as I am, you need to go and see Meri. As much as I have worried over your acceptance of your new role, she has worried about you as well," Cupid's voice rumbled in her ear, and Mia decided that she liked how it made a shiver run through her.

Mia didn't answer because she simply didn't want to move from Cupid's embrace. He had his arm tucked around her so securely that she felt immensely safe. She relished the comfort that it gave her.

Together they had stretched out on the chair when the cherubs continued to party. Mia liked, but would never admit, the way they did things at the same time, as if they had a connection. It gave her a sense of belonging that she had struggled to find in the human world.

"I didn't think Gods, or any deity, for that matter would need sleep," Mia said while ignoring his comment.

"We don't, but I still partake every night. It helps me to feel less grouchy with the morning light," Cupid replied.

Mia wanted to see his face, so she swivelled around. For the first time since she had met him, his golden locks had an appealing tousle, and Mia itched to touch each strand. Shouldn't it bother her that she had this much attachment to someone she used to despise?

At that thought, Mia snapped upright. She pushed into a sitting position and Cupid groaned from behind her. She had to stifle her response to that noise when she wanted to cuddle back against him.

She recalled thinking she had felt a deep love for him begin to come to life inside her yesterday. Where had that come from? Just because she was this Goddess of Love didn't mean she had to feel anything towards the annoying, but still appealing, God of Love.

"Did the cherubs use their arrows on us?" Mia demanded as she poked Cupid in the chest.

"What? Why would they? The arrows only work on humans and neither of us are human anymore," Cupid replied.

"Then why am I feeling all... nice towards you all of a sudden?" Mia demanded.

"Maybe it's because I'm a nice God," Cupid winked at her, and she tried not to let her heart flutter at such a stupid gesture.

"Something happened and I don't know what it was, but I'm blaming you," Mia shoved a finger at Cupid.

"I haven't done anything that you didn't want me to do," he grinned.

Mia found this charming Cupid far too appealing. She needed to argue to try and escape these irrational happy feelings that went through her traitorous body.

Cupid was the reason she would remain trapped here until the end of her days. He was the reason she had lost her normal life because he couldn't do his job right. As hard as Mia tried to focus on her frustration at Cupid, all she continued to see was his delectable smile and the way his tousled hair looked.

It took a moment for her to gather up her fury again. Here she was as a Goddess and even then, this stupid God could steal her breath away. It frustrated her no end!
