After rushing, Luz finally got home. Somehow, she made it earlier that when she usually gets home.
Must have misjudged the time. Luz chuckled to herself in relief. At least I won't get an interrogation from Mom.
"Hola Mamá," said Luz as she went through the door.
"Oh!" exclaimed Camila. She was in her nursing scrubs and seemed surprised when she heard Luz.
"Hi mija! You're home early!"
"Yep," Luz replied, unsure of how to continue the conversation. Noticing this, Camila asked her a question.
"How was your day?"
"It was fine," Luz lied.
"Are you sure cariño?" Camila asked worriedly.
"Why are you early then? You caught me off guard."
"Uh..." Luz trailed off, not wanting to say that she ran home because she was busy in one of her school's bathrooms. She would definitely check her body to see what she was doing. Then she would find the bruises. She spotted that there were leaves in her hair and questioned her about it.
"Mamá, why do you have leaves on you?"
Instead of answering, Camila became flustered and completely avoided the question. She even forgot that she was asking Luz a question and changed the topic.
"Never mind that. I've made dinner so go to the table if you want to eat."
Luz found it suspicious, but she decided to keep it to herself.
Maybe she just had a rough day at work, she thought as she made her way to the dining table.
Once she was sat, she saw that the table space in front of her, which was usually filled with Camila's plate and silverware, was empty.
"Mami," she asked, "are you not eating with me?"
"I ate already mija," Camila assured her. "The hospital is short staffed so they need more nurses to do night shifts. I'm one of the few who volunteered."
Although she said it in a dismissive tone, her voice was shaking and her eyes were looking at the floor. Luz knew her mom well enough to know that it was a telltale sign of her lying but instead of confronting her about it, she decided to investigate.

"Bye mija! ¡No te metas en problemas! Love you!"
"Love you too Mama," replied Luz, who was pretending to eat her dinner.
As she stepped out onto her porch, Camila carefully scanned her neighbourhood. Their neighbours had turned in early that night so the lights left on were the streetlights. She then went over toward their car, creaked the door open, and quickly turned the engine on and off.
That will be able to keep Luz off my shoulders, she thought. She suddenly heard a sound from her house and turned around.
The house was as quiet as ever.
She shrugged it off and quietly sneaked toward the woods beside their house.
At the same time, Luz was watching everything unfold; she was peeking through one of their living room windows.
Why would she turn the car on and off again? she wondered. Is it to throw someone off her tracks?
"Something fishy is going on and I'm gonna find out what it is," shouted Luz to no one in particular. She then quickly dived down as her mom abruptly turned around.
Luz you fool, she mouthed to herself. She hoped her mom would just ignore the sound. If she went back to the house, she would be caught. Luckily, she turned back to walk into the woods.
The woods? Why would anyone want to go into that death trap?
Luz was aware that the forest beside their house had been the site of several mysterious deaths. The oddity was that on every person who died in those woods, none of them had even a scratch. They were all perfectly healthy, except for the fact that they were dead. This just added to her list of questions for Camila when she caught up with her, but for know she quietly tiptoed to the door, carefully opened it, and sneakily shadowed her mom.
