introductions to the other young hogwarts students past hermione and ginny did not fair so well for the young slytherin. harry potter arrived to the scene moments after vanessa had formally met ginny weasley.
although in his normal state, harry would never be so harsh and crude, he was quite bothered with his friends. he had written them countless letters over the summer, and received not one single reply. he was worried something had happened to them. once hearing of their safety from (the real) mad-eye moody, he was quite tossed.
ronald weasley had yet to meet the slytherin sorceress before this interaction, but this did not help the situation much.
harry and hermione embraced as he entered the room, ronald quickly joining the group with ginny and vanessa at the sound of his best friend's voice.
a small argument broke out between the three about the lack of responses to harry's letters until hermione had to calmly explain that dumbledore had ordered the hero's two closest friends to not respond to him during the summer.
vanessa knew why, and couldn't help but keep a pointed, and knowing look on her face. cockiness and over-exuding confidence was a personality trait hand in hand with near perfect omniscience. others without that power failed to understand how it could cause some behavioral hiccups.
"why is she here?" harry asked his friends quietly, noticing vanessa in the corner with her arms crossed. he attempted to ask without her noticing, but she of course had noticed. his tepid and sour attitude did not go unnoticed by the young seer. his entire energy brought down the frequency of the group. he was the true definition of buzzkill.
isn't she one of the least trustworthy people in our whole year? harry screamed in his mind. he had stereotyped her due to her house, again. ronald gave the young auclair a similar look, while ginny rolled her eyes and hermione gave vanessa an apologetic small smile.
before anything else could be said, two large and lanky ginger teenage boys appeared behind ronald and harry with a loud snap and flash! apparation, vanessa realized. they must be of age to be doing magic like that.
"hello harry," the two identical wizards smiled simultaneously. "happy you're alive-"
"-nasty, those dementors-"
molly's screams could be heard all the way from downstairs.
"just because you can use magic does not mean you need to do it for everything!"
seeing she wasn't wanted, vanessa turned to hide her frown. no one was going to acknowledge her besides ginny and hermione this entire trip, she had a feeling. that was fine, she supposed. rather true friends than fake ones. vanessa always saw right through it anyways. hermione was intellectually her equal. vanessa was sure ginny would prove the same.  vanessa would not allow some poisoning testosterone to allow her to forget that she was a powerful auclair witch.
the teenage twins had disappeared again without a moment's notice to vanessa. the young witch approached her bed, searching for her books on spells, rituals, and more research on her kind. it was important for vanessa to truly be in touch with her gifts to understand what was expected of her. heavy, leather bound textbooks came from the battered trunk and plopped onto the bed.
closing her small trunk and locking it with the heat and pulse in the palm of her hand, she turned and looked at the group that was staring at her. ginny and hermione could evidently tell she was uncomfortable with the glares, and the two young women felt bad for the uncouth behavior of the young men.
picking up her books and other supplies, and holding them close to her chest, vanessa walked up to the door, and waited for the two boys to move without another word.
if she was not wanted, she would not wait around for them to change their minds. she was doing work for dumbledore, and no one else.
once the auclair witch had disappeared from earshot, hermione shut the door, keeping ron and harry from fleeing the bedroom.
"are you two thick?" ginny asked. "that was rude,"
"shes a slytherin," ronald defended, being as daft as hermione always knew he was.
"very observant ronald, she was also brought here by dumbledore. because her and her father pledged allegiance to the order." hermione rolled her eyes at them, crossing her arms. "honestly harry, i expected better from you."
"from me? at least i'm honest when things are evidently out of place."
"she risked her life by coming here and offering us her help. the least you two could do is be a little kinder to her. she already feels out of place enough being in slytherin. i've worked with her in school before. she's brilliant, and kind and quite hilarious, actually. however it's evident that you two are turned so bitter by any slytherin you think they're all the same as malfoy!"
ronald and harry knew hermione was right. they had slighted the poor girl out of a proper introduction, and a proper chance to establish herself. being a seer made it hard enough. hermione knew how dangerous it was for a family as unique as the auclairs to establish their allegiance with the order of the phoenix. to her, that was more than enough truth.
vanessa found herself in a secluded study after wandering around the entire estate. she had closed the door, and sat down on the ground. the auclair wanted to truly understand the energy of her new shelter, before she opened up her soul to it. it was a bonding between a seer and their space. she opened the small woven bag her mother knitted for her and found the small pieces of white chalk.
the young woman traced her fingers slowly on the woven fabric. she could feel her mother's energy still on it, and she missed her so.
drawing boundaries of protection for the rest of the home, to prevent any bad energy she may encounter from leaving, she hurriedly started her ritual.
she ran her hands over the top of her book until it flew open. the incantation she needed for the strengthening of her soul was bolded against the paper.
she wouldn't be practicing any true soul magic tonight, but rehearsing rituals was very important for their success. hand motions, and incantations were important to her craft. she would practice lifting coins, unlocking locks, speaking to the dead.
she was about to begin when a knock on the door sounded. she waved her hand, the door flew open. the gaggle of assumably weasley gingers, hermione granger, and harry potter stood expectantly staring at her.
"can i help you?" vanessa asked, crossing her arms. she was rightfully bitter about her mistreatment from earlier.
"i'm sorry i was a bit of a..." harry started.
"prick? tosspot? dickhead?" vanessa started. "i understand the beef you have with people like malfoy and parkinson. but would dumbledore have me here if i was anything like them? the man is no fool," the witch spat at him.
"we know," hermione spoke while fighting a laugh about the auclair's attitude, "they're truly sorry. new people don't mix well with us, i'm sure you can understand."
eyeing up the group of teenagers, vanessa gave a small accepting nod. things had been hard for harry. especially when cedric was murdered.
"what are you doing with that stuff?" one of the tall identical boys asked in the back.
"i was about to practice. i have a lot of work to do to prepare. my father is much stronger than i, he has experience fighting voldemort already." vanessa crossed her arms, shrugging.
"can we watch?" ron asked, boldly.
a snort came from vanessa's mouth and she suppressed a laugh. "oh, you're serious?"
"if you're comfortable, of course," harry spoke up, hopeful to not re-offend the witch.
vanessa gestured for the group to follow. ginny looked the most intruiged of them all.
i can't just do coins and locks now, they'll all be expecting something phenomenal, vanessa realized.
she took her chalk and drew a bigger shape. it was odd, and polarized. the group watched in silence.
vanessa would learn this is the most quiet the group of witches and wizards would ever be.
"what i'm about to do," vanessa spoke slowly, getting down into her knees. she was a bit nervous. she's never done this in front of anyone other than her professors and her family. "speaks to the dead. i help them cross over. there's a lot of energy in this place, and honestly it makes me angry. i need to get it out before my head falls off. so please, shut up and hold your questions until the end. if i screw up, we could all be dead."
the students didn't know whether to take her seriously or not. wonderment filled their eyes as the witch slowly began to move her hands, until they moved so quickly the eyes of the audience could barely keep up. as if the act was being replayed faster and faster each time. wind began to swirl around the room until bookshelves began to shake.
augustus could hear the noise from the dining room and had to reassure the other members of the order that his daughter was safe in her practice. he could feel the electricity pulsating through his own veins at her calling to the restless dead.

after a chaotic and hectic moment, the lights in the room all went out. the room was still, and silent. vanessa opened her eyes, and saw the group of teenagers jump away from her.
i forgot that happens, shit.
every time vanessa crosses a plane, her eyes change. it's what happened to her in the kitchen when she channeled to scare mundungus, and she was sure it was what spooked the students watching her.
vanessa closed her eyes and blinked a few times, before reopening them.
the young students watched as the white of vanessa's eyes turned from a dark navy blue, almost black, back to a crisp and glassy white.
"sorry about that," the young witch gave a small nervous smile. "so.... what did you think?"
ronald's jaw dropped as he sized up the powerful seer. "wicked."
