6 months before Percy and Peter met

Percy could not believe it. There he was, in the apartment, in front of the lifeless bodies of his mother and stepfather.
He had just come back from a day of monster hunting, and since he had discovered the lifeless bodies several hours ago, he had been unable to move. Unable to make a sound.

It couldn't be true, could it? This has to be a nightmare, he'll wake up any moment, he thought.

But no. It was real.
And it was his fault.
For some time now, he had decided to make his city a safe place. So he'd put on something to make sure he wouldn't be recognized (sunglasses and a chest protector) and then go out into the city to hunt monsters in his spare time.

But he had left his family alone.
He had sworn off quests. Yet, five days ago, a special quest was given to him by a God. Unable to refuse because the fate of many people depended on him, he had gone. But he had found nothing.
He had been trapped.

"What had happened?"

Percy turned sharply.
Chiron was standing in the frame.

"Percy explains."

Tears streamed down Percy's cheeks.
"I killed them... it's my fault they died."

"What are you talking about? And where have you been for the last five days?"

"On a quest for a god. But I was set up."

"Trapped?"

Suddenly, some kind of smoke comes in and surrounds Chiron's face.
His eyes widen. A frightened expression is painted on his face.

"Percy how could you..."

"How could I what?"

"I never thought... how... no, it's impossible..."

"Chiron?"

The centaur backs away slowly.
"You will pay for your crime... I would never have believed that about you..."

Percy steps forward, uncomprehending.

"Don't come any closer! Killing your own family..."

"I didn't kill them!"

"But you are the one I saw commit this atrocity... I'm sorry, Percy. I loved you very much, one of my best students. I don't understand how you could do this..."

Chiron takes out a bow and arrow.

"Hey Chiron, what are you doing ?!"

"What I must do to preserve the good of this world. Even if it tears my heart out."

He bends his bow, and Percy has no choice but to run and jump out the window. The arrow flies past his ear, nicking it slightly, but he doesn't stop.

He has no time to think. He runs as fast as he can. He climbs into Paul's car and starts off hurriedly, still in shock from everything that has just happened.

He needs to put as much distance as possible between himself and the car so he can sit back and think.

He drives for several hours, disregarding the rules of the road. He only stops when the car runs out of gas.

As soon as he gets out of the car, he falls to the ground, his adrenaline having worn off. He crawls with difficulty on the side of the road and stays there, without moving, trying to sort out the real from the false for hours.

What happened? How could it all happen so fast?

Percy didn't have an answer. Why didn't Chiron believe him?
Now the whole camp was going to be against him. He had no more allies. Some might believe him, such as Grover or Annabeth, but he would put them in danger.
What would they think of him? Discovered at a crime scene and running away, of course they would believe as Chiron did. Percy had no illusions. But the worst part of it all was the root cause. He couldn't believe his family was dead. His mother, always smiling, always laughing, so happy lately.
He would never see her again...

Suddenly, sadness gave way to immense anger. His family had been killed. Percy stands up and looks to the sky.
"Whoever you are. Whoever you are. Listen and don't forget what I'm about to tell you. You took from me what I held dearest. You took away everything that meant anything to me. There is nothing left to hold me back. No more morals, no more pity. No more responsibility. I'm going to find you, no matter how long it takes, no matter what it costs me. And I'm going to get even."

After these words, a light breeze is felt, but disappears immediately.

Percy begins to walk with a determined step towards the nearest town. To find his enemy, he must get information. And to do that, he must hunt monsters. Percy will put on his suit, and get his hands on the killer.

Percy was headed to New York.

He didn't know it yet. But he was about to have an encounter there that would... change his life.

In the present

"Hey Percy, you coming skateboarding tonight?"

Percy smiled.
"I was going to suggest it! Same place as usual?"

"Yep!"
Peter checked Percy's hand and enter in his classroom.

It had been two weeks since Percy had become a student here. Of course he skipped classes, using the Mist to make it look like he was there. Instead he wandered around looking for monsters.

Peter had become a true friend.
They are similar, the same principles, the same delusions. Almost like a brother.

Percy was surprised. A sudden, unexpected friendship. He didn't set out with the idea of making friends. But here he was, and they met.
He was sure it would be a great friend, in the present as well as the future.
Percy even managed to laugh genuinely, even though his dark thoughts weren't absent for long... not for a second, in fact.

Percy shakes his head. This is no time to be thinking about all this.
In the distance, he hears police sirens. New York is constantly in turmoil.
Maybe he'd find some monsters.

He heads into a dark alley, puts on his soft chest engraved with a trident on it, and puts on blue sunglasses.

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a pen, which he uncaps, turning it into a sword.

"Time to be a hero!"

And he dashes off in the direction of the police's sirens
