Spider-Man swayed, angry, but mostly sad.

He knew who this madman was.
And he also knew what he was capable of.
Killing an eight year old girl wouldn't bother him.
Just as killing a teenage girl hadn't bothered him either.

The dramatic scene replayed in his head.

"So Spider-Man! Or should I call you Parker? You want to save her?!"

He was on a bridge, at the top, about fifty meters high, a sleeping woman in his arms.

Spider-Man was coming, wanting only to save her.

"Let her go! She had nothing to do with it! It's me you want!"
He lands on the pillar in front.

"Hm... let me think. What sounds more appealing? What would hurt the most? That your little darling ends up in the other world, or that I physically torture you?"

With that, he starts pacing back and forth on the other side of Spider-Man, looking thoughtful.

Spider-Man holds out his arm.
"Please, let her go. This is between you and me."

The other one smiles like a madman.
"Okay, I'll do it. If you want it. Bad term knowing that I'm holding her so high."
And he drops the young woman into the void.

Spider-Man reacts instantly.
He jumps in the void after her, hoping to catch her.

But he takes a violent blow in the ribs, which sends him waltzing.

"So, the spider? Can't we save his girlfriend? A fatal fall is coming!"
The madman laughs even harder, blocking his way.

Peter knew it. He had to save her. It cannot be otherwise. He must save her.

Without wasting time, he sends a hook to his opponent, freeing the passage and jumps again in the void.
He knows that he will not catch her.

In a last hope, he throws a web, still in full fall.
The web stretches, too slowly for his taste, towards the one he loves, who is getting dangerously close to the ground.

SHLAF!

The web stretches.
Spider-Man breathes with relief, he had caught her. He had made it.

He drops to the ground, and approaches Gwen, inert.

He grabs her in his arms and unhooks the web that had caught her.

"Gwen, hey wake up!"
He gently caresses her face.
No answer.

"Gwen? I saved you, did you see? I saved you!"
Still no reaction. No heaving of the chest either. She's not breathing. Blood is pouring from her nose.

"Gwen...? I saved you... stay with me..."
He presses his forehead against hers, his voice trembling.
"Please, Gwen..."

"She's dead Parker!"

Spider-Man raises his head, still in shock.
"What are you talking about?"

"A fall from that height, you die before you hit the ground! She's dead!"
And, on his glider, he starts to do tricks above Spider-Man, laughing like a madman.

"Gwen, sweetheart I saved you... I caught you..."

It was impossible. Spider-Man was saving people. And he couldn't save the person he loved the most.
