This time there were no fields. I flew higher in the sky so no people could see us as we approached New York. Still able to see below vaguely, I flew around the city, searching for a perfect spot. Then I spotted a highway running from the centre of the city to a tiny town about 10 miles from there. There were no buildings either side of the highway except for one run down place. I figured I could land right behind it so no one driving on the highway could see, if I was fast enough.
"Ready?" I asked Scarlett.
" Where?" she said.
I pointed to the building. " There. I could come down just behind it."
" Think you'll be able to?"
" Yeah. But I'll have to be very quick, so hold on."
" Ok. Go."
I pulled up before pushing my head and body down to the ground. I felt Scarlett's fingers dig into my collar bone, but it didn't hurt. I prepared myself and dived, head first. I was on the ground before I knew it, my feet scrambling for some grip on the sandy ground. I skidded to a halt. I'd landed perfectly, just behind the old building which I could now see had once been a petrol station.
" That was fantastic. I thought we were gonna crash, really." Scarlett sighed with relief as she jumped off my back.
" Should we hitch a ride from one of the cars here?" I suggested.
" Ok."
I realised something " Wait, what if I attack the driver."
" You seemed to handle being around the old people really well. You were even able to talk to them and seemed to stay in complete control of yourself while you were feeding. Sometimes even that's a challenge for experienced vampires. So I think you'll be great."
" Really?"
" Really."
We walked out from behind the petrol station to the side of the road. I put my hand out. A few cars ignored us and drove on by but then an old dark red truck pulled up next to me. I gave the driver, who was a bald middle aged man with ginger stubble on his chin, a smile as I walked with Scarlett over to his truck.
" Hop in the back." He said with an American accent.
" Thanks." I called as Scarlett and I climbed into the hold of the truck.
The man must have recognised my English accent because he said through the open window of his truck. " You from England are ya? What ya doing ere?" he pulled off the side of the road and started driving towards the small town.
" Oh we're hoping to move here. Maybe that town you're heading towards. Are you local?" Scarlett said.
" Yeah, I work in the big city. You're wanting to move to Harrison then. It's nice there, everybody knows everybody kinda place, you know?"
" Sounds nice." I looked at Scarlett.
" Yeah it is." He laughed. " It'll take a while for folk to get used to you English gals."
" I'm sure we'll cope with the teasing. " Scarlett laughed politely.
I suddenly realised something " Scarlett!" I whispered urgently to her. " What about money? Flip, Scarlett how are we gonna buy a place if we have no money?"
" Would you relax." Scarlett said calmly, I looked at her wildly. Then she reached into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out a black credit card with the name Miss S Bloomes inscribed on it.
" How'd you get that?" I asked her, amazed.
" I got it years ago, when it was easier to fake a birth certificate. My Father had a stash of money I claimed when he died and I paid it onto this."
" How much is on it?"
" A few million."
" What! Scarlett, you never told me-"
" Violet, shhh!"
I looked around. We were now in the town of Harrison. The driver pulled off the small tarmac road beside a small cottage which had a For Sale sign stuck in the front garden. I looked at Scarlett who said " This looks like a nice place, and it's up for sale too." she smiled.
" It sure is. I live here. We are hoping to get a bigger house. For a bigger family if you know what i mean." He smiled. " You interested? I thought you'd want a place a bit more... Upmarket." the truck driver said.
" I think we are interested, Mr...Uh.." I said.
" Cerney, Jo Cerney. Just call me Jo."
" How soon could you move?"
" A few weeks."
I smiled. " This place would suit us, we aren't fussy. We could stay in a hotel nearby while you move out. oh how much are you wanting for it?"
"Oh, about 150,000 dollars. Hey, my wife is probably home now so... Could you excuse me for a moment?"
"Of Course." Scarlett said. We stayed in the back of the truck while Jo hopped out of his truck and walked across the lawn and let himself in his house. When he opened the front door a female voice called. " Is that you ,Jo?" He closed the door behind him.
" Is he gonna ask his wife if they can move out that soon? He looked hopeful." Scarlett said.
" I dont know. It's kinda much to ask someone to just pack up and leave their home. Moving house takes days, even weeks or months like he said. We should just tell him he needn't bother and we'll find an apartment somewhere." I said.
" No, I love the look of this place, we have plenty of money to stay in a hotel for a few weeks. We have enough to buy new furniture too. After all we are going to be living here."
" We should have fun decorating this place." I brightened.
"Yeah. I am proud of you, you know. The way you an control your instincts so easily. You didnt even look like you were struggling."
" Oh. I wasn't. It as strange it was kinda like it was there subconciousy. It wasnt hard at all, not like it was with the old couple. Maybe it was because I just fed."
" Yeah. Still, you're the most in control Vampire i've ever seen." Scarlett said and I smiled.
