The world was so much clearer when I opened my eyes for the first time as a vampirette. It was like someone had switched a light on and everything was brighter. Scarlett was sitting on my bed watching me. There was still blood on her lips but she was no longer in hunting mode. I was exhausted after the pain of becoming a vampirette so I slumped to the floor gracefully. One of the things I'd noticed while I was with Scarlett is that vampirettes are graceful in everything they do. They could fall over (not that one ever lost their balance) and still land perfectly on their backs and jump back up again in the next split second. Scarlett was still studying me.
"Sorry." she said finally. I can hear better too, I thought.
"is that the best you can do?" I noticed my voice had changed. It sounded like music ringing out across the room. Scarlett had noticed too. Her mouth opened slightly.
"I can't undo what I did. I regret it but-"
I interrupted her " too right you can't undo it. You've ruined my life. But you couldn't control yourself, I know."
Scarlett looked away from me. " you know what happens now."
" yes" I said but she continued anyway.
" we have to leave soon after..."
" soon after what?" I asked her.
" we fake your death." she looked at me.
I nodded once. " I have to say goodbye to my mum... I'm all she's got... I don't know how she's going to take losing me."
"you can't say goodbye, Violet."
"why not? You can't deprive me that too."
" because you will kill your mum."
"if I can control myself..."
" you won't be able to. You've seen what I'm like when i see blood. I can be around humans because I spent years trying to learn to control myself around them. All you will be able to think about is blood."
I thought about the last time I'd seen my mum. When I ran in through the front door with Scarlett after school and dumped my bag in the hallway. My mum had turned around when we entered and kissed me when I ran over to her. She'd asked me if I'd had a nice day at school and had said hello to Scarlett. I remembered she'd smiled when I told her yeah, it was good. I'd told her to call when dinner was ready as Scarlett and I headed up the stairs.
"how will we do it?" I asked Scarlett
"Humans can't detect a vampire pulse, so that won't be a problem... There is already blood stained on the floor there so it will look suspicious if you supposedly fell out of the window, so..."
" I hit my head on the glass table after falling off the bed. Smash my head against the table so I bleed more, I'll lie on the floor there... It'll be hard to keep still though..."
Scarlett considered my idea. "Ok. It is easier to control your body as vampire than you might think, you won't have a problem there."
"Wait, will you be okay with the sight of my blood again?"
"It's vampire blood now. It's only human blood we're after."
"Could I die this way? I mean if I lost enough blood..?"
"No. Vampires are always reproducing blood so no matter how much we lose we can't die from it."
I accepted her answer. She looked at me. "One second." I said. I untied the white bandage I'd wrapped around my head earlier. The cut at the back of my head had healed due to my vampire blood. I walked into the bathroom again where I flushed it down the toilet. I went back into my room.
" Are you ready?" Scarlett asked.
I took a deep breath. "Yes."
"Just try to keep still, it's easy enough to almost paralyse yourself."
I concentrated. I stiffened my body and then focused my eyes on the air straight ahead until I felt like I was completely still. Scarlett was right, it was surprisingly easy, even easier to stay in this still state than it was to try to snap out of it. I could still hear and see okay, even without moving my eyes.
"Perfect" Scarlett picked me up and carried me over to the bedside table where she stood me up on my bed and let go. I fell and my head smashed against the glass table. Then my body rolled and I landed on the floor on my back. Soon blood wet my ears as it gushed out of the back of my head. Scarlett screamed loudly and I heard my mum running up the stairs and into my room. Then her scream came. "VIOLET!"
" She was just jumping on the bed and-" Scarlett stuttered. My mum shouted at Scarlett to call 999 and rushed over to me. I think she knew it was too late. That I had lost too much blood. While Scarlett phoned the ambulance my mum sat beside me.
"What have you done, Vi, silly?" She started to cry. "Come on, Vi, turn over, talk to me. Just don't leave me please, Violet. I love you. You've always known that haven't you? I love you, Violet."
Scarlett came back into the room when she'd come off the phone. "The ambulance is on it's way. They said five minutes."
"What happened?" My mum asked Scarlett and it was clear she hadn't been listening when Scarlett had told her before.
"We were messing about and Violet was jumping on the bed and she fell off and hit her head..." Scarlett pointed to the bedside table and my mum glanced at the smashed glass with blood dripping from it.
The ambulance came a few minutes later. Scarlett ran down the stairs to let the paramedics in. They came into the room with a folded stretcher. They wanted to know my name and my mum told them. They asked what had happened and Scarlett explained. "Are you her mother?" One asked my mum.
"Yes." Then they came over to me and one checked my pulse. I heard him sigh. He turned and whispered something to the other paramedic. He wrapped the top of my head in a bandage, carefully, not covering my eyes with it. They folded the stretcher out and moved my body onto it.
"What did you say to him?" My mum said anxiously.
" Your daughter has lost a lot of blood, Ms Hudds." The paramedic said as they lifted me up.
Another tear ran down my mums wet cheeks. "But she's going to be okay, isn't she?"
"Its very hard to say." They carried me down the stairs and outside to the ambulance. My mum got into the back of the ambulance after the paramedics. Scarlett had followed them outside.
" Should I come..?" she said.
My mum considered letting her come to the hospital. " Yes."
Scarlett climbed in. The ambulance went quickly to the hospital. The doctors there told my mum there was nothing they could do to save me. A doctor came into the room and closed my eyes. My mum then came and stood by the bed I was lying on.
"I love you. Goodbye darling." she kissed my forehead and turned, crying, and walked out of the room. I spent a lot of time thinking, with my eyes closed after that.
When i finally decided it was safe to open my eyes, I realised I was in a coffin. I was thinking about coffins and then realised I hadn't even considered the chance my mum might have decided to cremate me. I felt sudden relief. I heard someone on the outside. It took them a moment to prise open the coffin. Then the coffin opened and Scarletts face appeared in the moonlight.
" Come on." she said as she stretched her hand out. I took it and pulled myself out of the coffin.
