My eyelid wavered slightly but I was able to keep it from closing as I waited for the feeling of my eye filling with water. I sat like that on the bed for a while, and when no water came, I finally gave up and blinked. I hadn't realised Scarlett had been watching me.
" We don't produce tears." She said. She was sitting on the bed beside mine in the motel room we checked into a few hours ago after we made Jo Cerney an offer on his house. He agreed and thought he should start to move out as soon as possible. The flat screen tv buzzed with the voices of people talking to a popular host on an american chat show. Although the volume was low I could hear what they were saying but I blocked that sound out.
" Oh, I was just figuring that. What else can't we do that humans can?" I asked her.
"Well...Umm... We don't sweat! So we don't get stinky but it is a nice feeling to have a shower every so often cause going without one is gross even though it wouldn't make a difference hygiene wise. What else? Did you know that if a vampire drinks another vampires blood he can become a clone of the vampire who he drank the blood of? It's strange."
"What? What if a vampire accidently drinks vampire blood instead of human blood?" I wondered.
" That wouldn't happen. You can always tell who is a vampire and who is human, and plus, vampire blood smells horrible to us. Human blood smells sweet, remember? You just can't mistake it. See." Scarlett sat up on the bed and dug her thumb nail into the tip of her index finger on her left hand.
"What are you doing?" I asked. I knew she wasn't hurting herself for it takes a lot to really hurt a vampire. Cutting yourself felt like a small tickling sensation, like a feather brushing over your skin.
"Look, see," She held her hand out to me."Now remember what the smell of human blood was like? Now smell this." Scarlett held the finger with the spot of blood on its tip up to me. I leant forward and sniffed at the air. A horrible stench filled my nose, stinging my nostrils.
"Eww! Awo! Thats just...Horrible!" I cried. Scarlett retracted her hand. "Who in their right mind would want to even think about drinking that?"
"Well that's how vampire twins are made." Scarlett said
"Seriously?" Scarlett had told me about vampire twins before, she'd mentioned it once when we were talking one day when I was human.
" Yep. Weird, huh?"
"Really weird. Are there any other weird things we can do?" I asked.
"The pupils of our eyes change when we go into hunting mode, of course, you witnessed that yourself. I remember vaguely the first time I saw a vampire when I was human. It was the most terrifying thing. I was having a sleepover that night with my best friend, Sarah. We were walking back from the shop with the milk and the bread and some sweets we'd bought. It was getting dark and there wasn't many people about where I lived. " I listened intently as Scarlett spoke.
"We took a short cut through a long lane between these houses. I remember talking to Sarah as we walked and then, it was like this shadow had flew down from the roof into Sarah. The next second she was on the ground, her neck bleeding, a man crouching over her. I didn't scream. I just stood there with the plastic bag in my hand staring at the thing attacking her. He was drinking her blood. I should have run, I don't know why I didn't run, I might have got away, maybe. Then he turned around and looked at me and I saw his eyes. The red pupils and the black irises. They changed and became normal, human like, a light blue colour. He wanted to play with me, mess with the frightened 15 year old. 'Hi.' he said and I'd just stood there, stunned. Then he said 'Oh, don't be frightened, child.' and, I can't believe I was even able to say this, after I'd witnessed the most frightening thing I'd ever seen, but I said 'I'm not a child.' the man had smiled and said 'You are bold. That's unusual. Mostly, they just scream and run, well, do what they call running, but it's merely slow walking.' I was shaking and I kept looking at Sarah's limp body, lying on the ground. Without thinking, and stupidly, I leapt at the man and went at his face with my nails. But he put one rock solid hand out and I just bounced off it, mid-air, and crashed to the ground against the wall. To my surprise, I thought I'd made him angry, the man laughed and said 'Maybe you are worth keeping.' I was thinking phew, he is not going to kill me, but Sarah's dead. Sarah. Then I said 'C-can I go?" and the man replied "No, no, of course not darling." and that's when he came closer to me and grabbed me. "Oh, you really are quite pretty." I thought he was going to attack me, or kill me. He bit my neck and the pain pierced through my veins. That's why I feel so terrible about attacking you; I know what it feels like."
"Oh, Scarlett."
"I'm sorry, Violet. I'm so sorry."
I paused. "What... What happened? After you were changed?"
"I, I woke up, or whatever and the man was standing there staring at me. He was smiling. Then he said ' Hey. Oh I forgot to ask you your name! How rude of me. I'm Gary.' I just stared at him. 'Well? Your name?' He said. I told him it was Scarlett. He said 'Okay Scarlett. You are now a Vampirette, thanks to me. To survive, you must drink human blood and keep our secret-that vampires exist. Now, though, you must help me dispose of your friend here.' He had pointed to Sarah's body.' come on then.' I got up and he lifted the body. 'Try to keep up' he said and then he sped off.
I considered not following him, but I knew that I probably wouldn't survive without his guidance so I decided to go after him. At first I thought I'd lost him, he had disappeared from my sight. But then, as I breathed in through my nose, I smelt him, and I smelt Sarah and I smelt her blood. I chased their scent, which was merged into one, and eventually found Gary emerging from a small lake, dripping wet. When I asked him what he was doing he said ' Getting rid of the body, kid, rule number one: leave no evidence.' he walked over to a huge tree where he pulled off a large branch, snapped it in half a few times so he had about 7 logs. He laid them in a neat circle, setting one in the centre. I watched as he took a deep breath and then blew on the logs. They suddenly lit up in flames, creating a blazing fire. 'Thats my gift, what's yours?' Gary said. I had just stared at him, stunned. 'Gift?' I had asked him. ' Yeah. Some vampires can see the future, others can control what others are thinking. I once met a vampire who could actually control a number of people at the same time, make them walk to the park and talk to other people. That's some mighty cool power, if you ask me. Some unlucky vampires get really crappy powers, like seeing people who have been killed by other vampires. That would freak me out. I'd end up surrendering to the Poteria. Attack a Great One. That would do it."
I had asked 'Whats the Poteria? What is a Great One?'
' Child, you don't wish to know of these things. But I will tell you, as knowledge may aid you in life. The Poteria are the great powers of the vampire world. Not a royal family, no, much worse. They say they protect the innocents and punish the guilty, but they are the greatest evil. Every vampire fears them. We dread the call of order from them. There are ten important figures in the Poteria, out of the total of 30 vampires, they are called the Great Ones. There are laws within the vampire world which you will pick up as you meet more vampires and hear the ancient stories of the Poteria. One of their most important laws is never feed on more than 4 humans at any one place within a space of 2 months. Right now you just need to know that you have to respect them.'"
"Wow." I said to Scarlett. "Is that true? The Poteria?"
"Yeah. I've never met them, but I have heard frightening stories about them. Usually, a vampire who is called by the Poteria is killed by them. There are about 5 really super-important vampires in the Poteria. Alester, Elizabeth, David and Harold. Alester is like the head of the whole Poteria. He basically makes all the decisions and sometimes does the killings, I heard." Scarlett told me.
"The Poteria. It sounds scary." I commented.
"You don't know the half of it." Scarlett said.
