DAYS PASSED

DAYS PASSED. MARSHALL never ended up contacting me, not that I cared. Instead, Elizabeth arrived to give me the details of what happened. Apparently, council had to reactivate the dagger because of the incident due to the false alarm, since it had to be given to the soulcatcher within the first encountering with the souleater. Though she didn't scold or snap at me like Marshall did, I could sense her disappointment.

"Sleeping again?" Andrew bounced over and slammed his lunch on the table, as if trying to wake me up. I yawned and went to rub my eyes. My hand crashed into my glasses, and I yelped. From the couple days of having them on, it slipped my mind that I wore them.

"Are you okay?" Andrew titled his head. "You've been... quiet lately."

"Tired," I mumbled, the table cooling my cheek in contrast to the California heat. No Emma today, either. The uneasy feeling in my chest stirred, and I passed it as not getting enough sleep. Finally lunch came around. My daily routine consisted of school, home, homework, sleep, and repeat. Somehow, it tired me out more than my previous schedule as Sohee.

"Yah," he poked my cheek. "You have to eat if you want energy."

"Not hungry," I muttered.

"I woke up early to make kimbap for you," he sounded offended as he opened the container. The colorful sushi roll containing eggs, carrots, meat, cucumber, and spinach combined with rice enticed my stomach, which gurgled at the delicious aroma. I laid a hand on my stomach, feeling my face burn slightly. Geez. How much did Lina need to eat?

"See! At least eat one. Besides, if you sleep now, your sleep cycle will get messed up, and you'll end up sleeping late and then you'll constantly have to take naps which will then tire you out even more—"

I shoved a kimbap in his mouth to shut his endless nagging. For a moment, he looked flustered.

"What?" I asked, defensive, brushing my ankles against each other. Swallowing, Andrew grinned, grabbing the chopsticks and taking another kimbap. He held in front of my mouth, and I shook my head. In response, he raised both his eyebrows.

"I can feed myself—" Taking the opportunity, he inserted the food in, snickering. The food wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, much like various dishes and flavors squeezed in one tiny roll. Chewing, I watched as a light breeze caused the tree branches from above us to shake, rustling Andrew's hair.

"It's good, right?" Brushing his bangs to the side, he fiddled with the blue flannel he wore, unbuttoned, with a white shirt underneath.

"Sure." When the corners of his eyes crinkled in joy, I cleared my throat. He didn't need to be so simple minded. Anyone could throw a compliment, even a fake one.

"Lina?" A hesitant voice called. Emma? She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear as she approached us. Recalling Marshall's anger directed at me, I gave her a once over. No bruises or scars—why did the elder get so worried?
