"I CAN'T BELIEVE you," I said, whirling on Lina

"I CAN'T BELIEVE you," I said, whirling on Lina. "You turned my dad around from an emotionless robot into something... actually human."

As additional punishment and Michael's right hand woman, Anisa forced Marshall to aid the restaurant, freeing Lina to come talk to me. The two of us were alone, since Emma and Elizabeth had left with their own errands to run.

Lina smiled and brushed her hair back in a ponytail. "Your family just needed a little mending."

With a hesitant gaze, and she pushed up her glasses.

"How's..."

"I broke up with him," I said, leaning my arm on the railing that led to her house, and sat myself on one of the stairs. Glanced back at the small, bare porch that still had no furniture. "You saw it over text, didn't you?"

"Sohee!"

I stared right into her eyes. Contrary to how she turned away from when we first met, she stood her ground this time. The corner of my lips turned upward.

New York did give her a backbone after all.

"I don't love him, and I'm not interested in pursuing a relationship with him. So why should I keep him around?"

"He's a nice guy," Lina said, and her lips trembled. "Maybe- maybe if you gave him another shot-"

"I'm not going to offer myself as leftovers," I replied in a dry voice. "I deserve more than that."

"But-"

"Would you date Andrew if I asked you to? He's not a bad guy, either."

Besides, Andrew was much more considerate than Hajun, who demanded more than offered. And he was better looking than Hajun, too-leaner, for one-paired with dimples and wide, doe eyes that pulled you in. I thought her decision would be obvious, and I'd have to persuade her otherwise, but...

"No!" She exclaimed, horrified. Her hands flew to her chest, as if I'd shot her.

"So how is what you're making me do any different?"

"Because! I love him And I never got to..." She trailed off, releasing a pent-up breath and crouching to the ground. Here she had a chance with the guy she'd been crushing on since freshman year, and ended up choosing someone else out of her league entirely.

"Why are you panicking? You do know that you can choose, right?"

"What do you mean?"

"Did the elders seriously not tell you?" I sighed. "When all this ends, you have to choice to return as me or yourself."

"What?" Lina's muffled voice through her jeans became clear as she snapped up. "I get to choose?"

"Obviously."

"But why me! I'm so indecisive. I'll have to leave my family if I choose Hajun. Or leave Hajun if I choose my family."

"Listen, I get it's a hard choice. But just because you make it doesn't mean it's easy for me, either. You think I want to leave Andrew?"
