AFTER THEIR SNOBBISH remark earlier, the couple remained quiet, glaring at other customers around them but not causing a scene. Half an hour passed, and I made my way out of the kitchen from another pile of dishes, rolling my shoulders back. Minus the slouched figure I adopted, everything was going fine.
Until it wasn't.
"Oh my!" The lady shrieked, her chair screeching back. "This is why I told you to move them earlier!"
Heads snapped up at the scene, and I clenched the counter. A kid who had been toddling over to her mother spilled the water on the floor just as Andrew placed the food on the couple's table.
"I'm so sorry," Andrew began apologizing profusely, grabbing a few napkins. Sorry? The water barely splashed her.
"Bring me the manager!" The man demanded, escalating the situation more than he needed to. Right. Because this totally was a five-star restaurant with managers and more than three employees, two of them working for free. Before I knew it, my feet took me to the crazy woman who thought she was superior to a cockroach. If I were Sohee right now, she'd be groveling under my feet.
"Apologies for the disruption," I grind out. Every word that came out of my mouth sounded painful—and I hated every bit of it—but I had to somewhat seem apologetic like Lina would be. "Would a refund be possible?"
"A refund? Do you really think that's going to fix everything? This rude child—"
"Maybe you should shut your mouth," I snipped, placing an arm in front of Andrew's body to prevent him from going anywhere. And doing anything surreal, like servicing them both a refund and a free meal next time they came.
The lady huffed and stared me down. "Where's the owner?"
"You're looking at her," I snapped. "And a refund is all that we're going to offer. Take it or leave it."
"I knew this restaurant had issues—"
Cutting her off, I hissed, "Then maybe you shouldn't have come back last week. None of the water seems to have landed on you, and the puddle didn't even reach your table. The only thing you two have done since you came into this restaurant is cause a disruption for other customers. So I suggest you leave."
Before I shove her out the door myself, that is. Shock registered on her face before she snapped, "Fine." Grabbing the man's hand, the two of them stormed out the restaurant.
"Sorry about that," Andrew called out to the other customers, bowing and crouching on the ground to clean the mess. The napkins in his hand were crumpled into small lumps, and he avoided my gaze, staring at his shoes instead.
"We're so sorry," the mother rushed in, arms around her child once the scene quieted down. "Here, I can help clean up."
"No, no," Andrew smiled, but it didn't reach the corner of his eyes. "It's fine, we can do it."
"Are you sure about that? I really don't mind, after all that you two did—"
Yeah, it was her child's fault. Cleaning the mess her kid made was the least she could do. Hanna passed by me, widening her eyes before cocking her head to the side, where Lina's parents stood. We locked eyes, and I saw the brief tense expression on their face before they masked it with a nod. Scanning the restaurant once more, as if making sure that everything was over, the two of them went back to work.
"We're sure," Andrew interjected, grabbing the box of napkins from the couple's table. "But thank you for offering."
The family thanked us once again and scooted slightly over, clearing the way for us to wipe the puddles of liquid. I sighed and bent my knees. The next words that came out of my mouth tasted unfamiliar and awkward. "Are you okay?"
He bobbed his head up and down, but didn't comment on anything more. Snatching a few napkins out of the box and dropping them on the ground, I let the napkins soak up the liquid. To the right, under the family's table, little scoops of rice were littered near the ground. I shuddered at the sight of it, and my stomach churned as I focused back on the task at hand.
I might completely lose my appetite if I stared at it for another second, and I was already on the verge of losing it.
