"SOHEE, HEAR ME out—" Andrew scrambled to his feet, and I scrambled to mine.
"How long?" My voice trembled.
He didn't answer.
"How long?" I screeched.
"The second day," he answered quietly. "Before Coach left. He stopped me in his office to talk to me about something, and... yeah."
I scoffed, and gritted my teeth. It wasn't even a bomb he dropped on me—he had cut off my whole breathing.
"I can't believe you," I shook my head, sucking in a harsh breath. "And you deliberately waited this long, huh?"
"What? Sohee, no."
"The ocean. The sharing. The questions. Everything. This was all a plan to get me to open up, wasn't it. Well. What's your end game, then? What do you want from me?"
The desperation on his face worsened. "Sohee—"
"Don't say my name!" I screamed, wanting so desperately to throw the plates in his direction. To throw this whole waste of a date back. I could see him stumble over to me, but I could barely make out the pain in his face, vision blurry.
"This whole time. You lied to me this whole time."
He lowered his voice. "I didn't believe him at first. I thought he was crazy or something. But the closer I looked, the more different you acted... and then there was the incident at the mall."
As if stabbing me in the gut wasn't enough, the knife twisted.
"What about the mall?"
"There were a few seconds that the... man didn't erase. And the dreams and your bruises. It was enough for me to connect what had happened. But—"
Clutching a fitful of hair in my fist, I released a sardonic laugh. Needles pricked at my eyes, and hot tears gathered. "So this whole time, you made me go in circles. Was playing me funny to you?"
"Hear me out, you promised—"
Promise? Promise?
"You knew! This whole time! When you were deliberately asking me questions about Sohee Young, and when I opened up to you. God, I must've looked so stupid. And you kept it to yourself. What, were you waiting for me to reveal more so you could sell it to the media? Get attention?"
"You know that's not what I was planning to do."
"I don't know, Andrew!" I shouted. "I— I should've known that this was going to happen. I knew it would. From the beginning, you were never honest with me. You're worse than my ex-boyfriends, worse than my dad."
His face fell. "You were waiting for me to mess up?"
A sob tore are my throat, and my chin quivered. "At least were honest in their hatred. At least I could see their end goal. But you!" I punched him in the chest. "You're the worst."
