Dashawn's POV

" Okay, class, before we get on the bus, I'm going to be assigning buddies for our field trip! Nobody is getting lost!" said Mrs. Johnson (very original).

She pulled out her clipboard and started reading off names. " Halona and Cody, Ally and Sabrina, Alicia and Jane, Melodie and Kiryomi, Dashawn and Thiago..."

She continues reading off names, but all I hear is a rush of blood in my ears. Of all the people in the world, why Thiago? I don't even know him. Why can't I be in the other class? Literally all of my actual friends are in the other class. They got to go to the fire station, which actually seems cool. We're stuck with a modern art museum. This is so unfair.

Pretty soon, Thiago walks over to me. " Do you like the front or back of the bus?"

" The back," I reply.

" Good choice," he smiles.

We climb onto the bus and slide into the second-to-last seat. I sit by the window, and he sits on the aisle. I feel really uncomfortable, like you're in your new friend's mom's car for the first time. I hate that I feel awkward, and that we have to go to a museum instead of the zoo or an aquarium or even the Museum of Flight in Seattle. I went once with my family- it was super fun.

Thiago's POV

Dashawn is really uncomfortable. I can tell, and I feel bad. I just moved here, so I've never been to the museum, really. Hey, maybe he could tell me about it! Then he would feel comfortable! Besides, the bus ride is like thirty minutes long and the field trip lasts all day. He's going to get comfortable eventually.

" Hey, I've never been to the museum before. Could you tell me about it?" Thiago asks.

" Well, they have these ugly sculptures that you can pose with," Dashawn said, turning his gaze away from the window and at me. " And the art looks like it can take two seconds."

I laugh. " You have a good way of phrasing things," I tell him.

" Thank you."

We talk the whole way there, and it's nice, because I don't feel awkward and uncomfortable, and neither does he. We have a pretty good time at the museum, and the sculptures are pretty hideous. We try to pose like it while Mrs. Johnson takes a photo with my phone.

As we're driving back, I take out my phone and set my home screen wallpaper to that funny photo. Something to remember this day by.
