TIME VARIANCE AUTHORITY
They walk into a room with a ceiling full of circles.
"What is this place?" Loki asks.
They watch as some random dude tries to make a threat.
Loki tries to run, but the woman soldier takes a device, and he is back with them.
After only the second time, she is fed up and takes him by the arm. "Come on."
"You're making a terrible mistake." He tries to resist. Laverna only glances at him to shut up.
"You're making a big mistake. Whoa, whoa, whoa!" The other guy tries to threaten again.
It seems everyone loves to threaten people here. Nothing new.
"Hello, ma'am, uh..." The receptionist greets them but gets cut off by the lead soldier.
"Log this as evidence." She puts the Tesseract on the counter.
"Oh... Can you at least tell me what it is?" The receptionist takes it in his hands and nothing happens to her.
"The Tesseract holds great power that is almost unlimited," Laverna explains before Loki can answer. He looks at her confused.
How can a little girl know all that? And why does she have so many weapons on her?
"So be very careful with it." He puts himself back in the narrative. (If you get the reference, I bloody love you)
"Okay..." The guy takes the Tesseract.
"Know this. You cross me, there are deadly consequences." Loki threatens again.
Laverna sees that something is reflecting on her right wrist. She discreetly takes a look under her glove and sees that she can no longer make an illusion to cover up her arm.
"No powers." She whispers to herself, but the woman soldier heard her.
The soldier throws Loki into a room and turns back to Laverna. "Follow me."
JUDGE RENSLAYER'S OFFICE
There's a knock on the door.
"Yes," The judge answers.
"Ma'am." The soldier greets as she enters.
"B-15, what brings you here?" She sees that behind B-15 is a girl.
"Ma'am, we found another Loki variant and brought him here. But with him was this girl. She seems to have been teleported with him."
"Why is she here instead of in the process of being logged?"
"That's the problem, there is no branch in her timeline. Everything seems to be going right."
"What? Show me."
B-15 hands her the TemPad. The Judge takes a look at it and tries to find a branch.
"That's impossible. Not even here in the TVA." The judge turns to Laverna while reading out loud from the TemPad. "So, you are Laverna Lavernalis. You possess black magic, and before you had some kind of other magic, although it is not specified what kind. You are a Soldier for Hydra and were... brainwashed."
"What does that mean?" B-15 questions her, but she doesn't answer.
"She won't respond. According to her file, they put words in her head which when spoken will make her do whatever you want."
"How can we break her out of it?"
"We can't, it's a part of her timeline. And as you said, it doesn't branch. But it should wear off after some time."
"Then what do we wanna do with her?"
"I don't know. But let me read her whole file." Renslayer types on her TemPad.
"Tell me, how do you possess black magic?" B-15 questions Laverna.
She thinks for a moment if she's allowed to answer her. But as she is a Soldier too, and it's a command, there is no other option. "I had some kind of other magic. I don't know all the things I could do. One time they said something like tricks, and sometimes I used Illusions. I can still sense it, though. They did something, and now I only have a bit of this weird magic left, and mostly black magic. That can be useful for mind-controlling people to make them tell their darkest secret or change their memories to make them do what they want."
"Okay. You said they. Don't you see yourself as a part of them?" B-15 tries to make it sound like a command because as far as she knows, she will only answer then.
"They are Hydra. I am simply their soldier who does whatever they want without a question."
"Now that's interesting." Judge Renslayer speaks up again.
"What?" B-15 stops her questioning.
"She is some kind of trickster god variant. She has a completely different history than most of them, but once possessed the same powers."
"Maybe the magic she was talking about."
"Yes, must be."
The Judge seems to think for a moment, before directly speaking to Laverna. "From now on, you will help us try to catch the Loki variant that has been causing us so much trouble."
Lie
Laverna can feel that that's now the only reason she wants to catch this variant. But she knows if she questions her, she will face pain.
"B-15, introduce the other and inform them. Then take her weapons and give her some of ours."
"Yes ma'am."
Laverna follows her to the room with all the other soldiers.
SOME TIME LATER IN THE NIGHT
They gave Laverna her own room. At first, she didn't know what for. B-15 explained to her that it was for her to rest in between missions.
She is currently lying on her bead. They took her weapons and put them somewhere safe.
It's the first time she is wearing something different from her uniform. They even freed her of her mask and told her she is allowed to speak when she wants.
Back at Hydra, she never really slept. After a mission, she was put in some kind of big metal box which was very cold.
A memory comes back in her mind from when she was walking around the TVA earlier. She saw Loki staring at an open drawer. For a brief second, an image flashed before her eyes.
Her thoughts wander to all the missions she remembers, and soon she falls asleep with only one thought on her mind.
Why?
