Gaven's mystery

Introduction

There was so much that had to be done to the old homestead. I haven't been back there in years. I knew as I approached the drive that time had  taken it's tole on the house and land, the barn wasn't much to look at either. I had left after my parents had died. They had been murdered and I was finally old enough and strong enough to prove it.

The sheriff Wayne Poston was a good ole boy that had lived in Gavens all his life, and he knew more than he was letting on. His son Andy an I were best friends growing up. There wasn't a time I can think of he wasn't there for me. The death of my parents had put the whole town in shock and the rumor mill started flying. My parents Zeb and Libby Pickens had been in a hit and run accident. The only witness was the old town drunk Elijah, he said he saw a green pickup truck hit my parents 1992 blue Camry and speed off. My pa was killed at the scene while mamma cried in agony dying. The thought of that makes me shutter to this day, it even haunts my dreams.

The report was short and brief. The case was left unsolved. I had finally came home to open the case and confront the demons that have haunted me for 6 months. Now that I'm of legal age, the attorney office of Bubba and Howell had contacted me, to settle the estate. Zeb and Libby had a sizable estate, a three hundred acre farm with two hundred of it was in timber alone.

The local lumber yard which was run by a greedy man named Gary Reds had wanted that timber for years. He and my pa had harsh words over it, the week before the wreck. He would be my first suspect to consider. He would be surprise to see good ole Amy Pickens. Zeb and Libby's only child, a strong fiery redhead although the nervous breakdown had tested me and my faith. As I stood here looking over my family's farm I knew the house would need a few minor repairs but the barn would need an overhaul.
