I also wanted some copies made. Gary needed to see them for himself. after all He was my uncle. boy that sounded weird. this whole case was just that way. I left the sheriff's office after thanking him for all his help, and headed to the attorneys office. the receptionist greeted me and told me it would be a few minutes if I didn't mind waiting. A team of wild horses couldn't make me leave at this point. It wasn't long before I had told them both the story and showed them copies of the papers that I had found. they were shocked as I was of course. they said they would send Gary Red copies. that way I wouldn't have to deal with him right now. I’m sure he's still mad that I had him locked up. with copies in my hand, I felt better knowing the originals were safe and would be dispersed as my grandmother Jamie had wanted ,While I was getting in my truck I saw Denver going in the IGA. so I decided to go on to the feed store it was only a few doors down.
I wanted to see about those chickens. I'm lucky I already had a chicken yard an a hen house built. Andy, and Denver had started working on repairing anything that needed fixing including the old pig pen that was off from the barn. They wanted to start checking the old pasture tomorrow. Denver said we needed some new fence to replace the old worn out one, that was also on my list. I started a charge account that way I could order what I needed at the time and mail them a check for it later. Pa's ole friend Edgar ran the feed store and would let pa and I fish in his pond anytime we wanted, he knew pa's love for that big catfish Goliath. I think he thought of pa as a son, he had never had kids of his on. Edgar called to me just then “Miss Amy come here, I want to show you something.” My word it was a cow a Holstein cow.
He said “Her name was Bell and she still had a few good years left in her, for fifty dollars she's yours Miss. Amy.”
I grinned and excepted the deal. With the biggest grin on my face I called Andy to come and pick up my beauty. He laughed so hard at me, he just couldn't refuse. I even sweetened the deal with Andy, I promised him a home cooked pot-roast and a sweet buttermilk biscuit. I was grateful at that moment for ma teaching me how to cook, maybe Andy won't remember the toast. After all I did have to many things cooking that morning at the same time, I won't make that mistake again, I hope. Guess I had better head on over to the IGA to get all the fixings, fit for a king. I was smiling and in my on world when I ran right into Denver.
“Miss Amy are you alright?” I was dizzy but only for a moment. I explained about me being lost in thought about the cow, no less. I must have looked mighty stupid to him, because he had a strange look on his face.
He was still holding my arm a little to tight for comfort when I looked down at my arm, he let go. Then his face changed back to normal. He just made me very uncomfortable and being around a crowd of people was just what I needed, so when I saw Molly I just had to call out to her, apparently she saw my problem [Denver]. As she approached me Denver made a quick goodbye.
Molly asked “What was that all about?” even tho she and I weren't exactly friends she knew trouble when she saw it. Lesson's she had learned the hard way I guess. Anyway he was gone, now time to explain to her.
As I started, she said “You don't have to say a word. I’ve had a run in with him before, he really creeps me out. He tried to kiss me at the spring dance this past year when you were gone, and he didn't like me telling him no. He left bruises on my shoulders before I could knee him in the groin. When I finally did hit the target he let go and backed away, slowly I should say.”
“I’m sorry Molly I had no idea.”
“Hmm half the town could of cared less, some people even said I deserved it.”
“No one deserves to be man handle Molly.”
“Well with my reputation I just figured it would be easier if I let it go beside I kicked him pretty good.” Then we both busted out laughing.
I looked at Molly and for once I saw what she thought about herself through everyone else's eyes, and I felt for her. She wasn't as bad as everyone made her out to be and I told her so. We laughed again and a kind of friendship was born. As I turned to look in the direction she was staring I saw Andy. He was trying to load my cow, and what a sight it was to see.
Molly looked at me and said “what in the world is he doing?”
“loading my cow.”
The laughter broke out so loud between us people started staring.
Molly and I said almost at the same time “shall we?” and we hooked arm in arm and walked into the IGA, just like on the wizard of oz. For me I felt like Dorthy and I was finally home.
