Pic of Lewis above* * *
Lewis recounts everything that had happened to the police, not missing a single detail. The whole time, he held on to Cleo's hand as the memory was still so fresh in his mind and he knew for sure that he was going to be having nightmares for a long time to come.
Upon hearing the detailed account of what happened to their son, Max and Linda we're understandably pissed, and Cleo was doing all she could to keep calm. She couldn't let her emotions get the better of her at a time like this.
The police on the other hand, didn't look at all convinced by Lewis's story.
"You say you dived in to the water to get Mr Bennett's phone, and after which when you came back up they were already gone.." the detective says rubbing his stubble, and with a bark of a laugh adds "that's not the story Mr Bennett told us though."
At hearing this, Lewis is utterly shocked, they were implying that he was lying.
"And what did Zane say?" Lewis asks as coolly as possible.
"Well, Mr Bennett said that you had jumped into the water of your own accord, even though he had begged you not to. You, with the encouragement of Mr Lockwood, jumped in anyway to get the phone against his better judgement. You had been down under for 3 minutes, and they were convinced you'd drowned, so since neither of them could swim, they had gone back to the dock to get some help." The police officer recounts Zane's statement word for word as he reads it from his jotter.
"That lying f-ktard!" Cleo seethes venomously.
Everyone looks to her wide-eyed. It was general knowledge that Cleo wasn't the cursing type.
"Calm down Clay." Lewis says soothingly, he knew that her getting angry would only worsen matters.
"How am I supposed to calm down?! Officers, Zane is a god-damned liar and you'd do better to check that story again!" Cleo practically yells.
Lewis notices that the water dispenser at the far corner of the room has begun to away slightly.
"Now, now Miss Setori, there is no need to yell okay, calm down. We will investigate further..." The detective tries to calm Cleo down.
"There is nothing to investigate officers. My son almost drowned out there because of that Bennett kid, so the only thing left for you to do is to go out there and get that criminal!" Lewis's dad was now also yelling, his eyes blazing.
"Calm down Mr McCartney, we are only trying to understand the situation. You'll have to agree that this is a very unusual case and a very serious accusation to Mr Bennett." The officer says, trying to reason with Max.
Linda, having heard enough of this says, "Do you have children sir?" She begins.
"Excuse me?" The officer says, taken aback.
"I asked you if you have children sir?" She replies, her voice firm and serious.
"Um, I have two actually.." the officer answers apprehensively.
"Then I think you can understand what we are feeling here. My son was practically abandoned in the middle of the ocean at the mercy of the elements and whatever else was out there, and for what? Because he tried to help an ungrateful, insolent and over privileged boy get a silly device, and now, instead of going out there to correct the wrong, you're here accusing my son of being a liar!" She finishes, resisting the urge to slap the beard of the officer. Max had to restrain her, because he could tell that she had lost her patience with these men.
