After school, the girls decide to meet at Emma's house. Cleo wanted an explanation as to why Emma wouldn't go to the party. It just didn't make sense to her. Whatever Emma's reasons might be, she was bent on convincing her otherwise.
Rikki only tagged along, because her dad was at work, and she had nothing better to do with her time. Plus, she was hungry. They were the only ones in the house, because Emma's parents were still at work, and Elliot was spending the night at a friend's place.
They were in the kitchen eating ice cream when Cleo begins.
" Emma, you still haven't told me why you wouldn't go to the party " she turns to Emma, who is adding more sprinkles to her ice cream.
" Are you still on this Cleo? " Emma asks exasperatedly
" Of course I am, you said you'd tell me later, this is later so spill " Cleo retorts.
Rikki discreetly takes her ice cream to the living room. She could already tell that this conversation was going to end in an argument, and or girl fight. Both, she didn't want to be a part of.
" Look Cleo, it's no big deal so just let it go will you! " Emma says with finality, noticing that Rikki has left the room.
" No I won't let this go. I know it has something to do with us being mermaids, so I wanna know so we can work something out! " Cleo responds, her ice cream long forgotten.
" Yes, you're right Cleo, it's because of this whole mermaid thing. In case you've forgotten, it's a ' pool ' party " Emma explains staring at Cleo pointedly.
" So? " Cleo asks still not grasping the entire situation.
Emma, resisting the urge to roll her eyes at Cleo's obliviousness, responds " pool party, meaning water lots of water. You know what that means for us don't you? " She adds.
Cleo widens her eyes knowingly. Of course she knew what that meant for them. She just wanted the day to go as normal as possible, and emphasizing on the fact that they couldn't go to the party because of the possibility that they could get wet, and grow huge fish tails makes her feel anything but normal.
" We can figure something out. Who says we have to go in the water? " Cleo tries to reason.
" Cleo, it's dangerous, and I'm not taking any chances, I'll congratulate Brian in another way, maybe buy him a present, but I can't risk it... We can't risk it. " Emma replies not convinced.
This makes Cleo even more upset.
" This is why I want us to fix this problem. It's eating into our lives, and stopping us from being normal teenagers. " Cleo retorts
" Since when have we ever been normal Cleo, I know I've never felt normal in my life, as much as I've been a spectacle. Everyone's always expecting something from me, only coming close to me when they know it'll benefit them. And you know what? I'm sick and tired of that shit. Cleo, you've been my best friend since forever, and always will be, we practically grew up together. You remember when we first met, you were crying on the playground because a bunch of kids called you a freak and a weirdo because you loved eating sand, you remember what I told you?" Emma asks now standing beside Cleo, her voice gentle at the end.
" You said that I should stop crying because the only reason they made fun of me was because they were jealous that I was different from them, and maybe even better than them. You said that they were normal, and that being normal was boring and overrated " Cleo responds quietly.
" And I meant that Cleo. Being normal is overrated and I'm so done with trying to please everyone around me at the cost of my own happiness. You're right, this mermaid thing will be hard but... " She reaches over to her melting ice cream, as soon as she touches the cup, it freezes over even colder than it was originally "... It sure has its perks " she finishes, taking a bite out of her ice cream while smiling.
