HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COURSE? (PART 2)

"It is your choice. You decided it"

It felt like I was hit by lightning when my sister uttered that sentence. It made me realize that there is no right or wrong in making any decision, it is only a matter of how strong you are to bear the consequences. Each decision leads you to a different path.

It is common that during this age we are indecisive because before this our parents decide for us. Now, the situation is different since we have to stand for ourselves. We are terrified that we are not choosing the right thing and the world is gonna end. I totally feel you.

Before deciding on your course, you have to know yourself first. What is your passion? What do you want to be in the future? What do you see yourself in 10 years?

Get a proper answer for each question first. For instance, if you like to investigate and conduct experiments, you may pursue the STEM field. On the other hand, if you are enthusiastic about language, why don't you continue in TESL or other languages like France, Arabic, and Bahasa Melayu?

Secondly, be realistic about your dream, so you will not end up daydreaming. As I mentioned previously, I got all Bs for my science subjects but score A+ for four of my non-science subjects. It actually has indicated the field that suits me. Unfortunately, I turn on a blind eye about it. I am not saying that if you get a B for your science subjects, it is the fullstop. It is ultimately incorrect.

This is the bitter truth that I want you to know. University life is the opposite of school life. There are no teachers to babysit you and feed you all the information. You definitely have to search on your own. That is my nightmare. The only thing that I can be independent of is language subjects. I attended multiple tuitions to just get a B. Imagine how many more classes I have to go to get an A?

I am not saying that it is impossible but it takes more effort to catch up. I am saying this on behalf of my perspective. You are entitled to your thoughts as well. There are many students who have proved that their results during SPM do not determine their success during pre-Uni and they manage to get 3.80 and above.

It is all on you.

Lastly, do what is practical. We can relate this point to my sisters' opinions. They want me to pursue in diploma because I can use that scroll to find a job. Other pre-Uni results excluding form 6 are invalid for job applications. It is mandatory to continue your degree. Furthermore, if your parents are financially unstable, you have to consider it too. If you are taking courses like Architecture, Engineering, and Medics, you have to bear expensive college fees. It is either you fight for a scholarship or you take PTPN. Pre-Uni fees are actually bearable but not degree. Mine was around 2K for two semesters. You do not have to worry much because you will get an allowance from KPT if your parents' income is under a certain amount.

Another dilemma is between the desire of your parents vs your passion. Gen Z always jokes about how Asian parents really want their children to become a doctor. But let's be real, not all people are born to wear lab coats and put stethoscopes on their shoulders. In my opinion, you have to sit down and have a healthy discussion with your parents. You have to explain your dreams and interest. You also have to pay attention to their point of view or else the discussion will be useless because they will think that you do not include them in your decision. After all, our parents just want to see us succeed and be happy. Let say that the discussion goes wrong and it becomes a heated quarrel, as a child you have to lower down your ego. There is no harm in doing what your parents ask for. Maybe there is barakah because you ease their hearts. After you have graduated in the course that is appointed by your parents, you can catch your dream back. Pursue your desired degree and work in your dream job.

I believe in you. May Allah guide your ways and ease your journey.
