The day of Fundy's birthday came and when Wilbur came to wake the boy up he found Aster already there, sitting on the edge of the boy's bed as he tore open a wrapped gift. Aster still had her bandages on but was smiling without a problem and looked just as excited as Fundy.
Fundy spotted his father first and grinned, pausing his unwrapping. "Haha! You missed Aster singing happy birthday to me!" He crowed triumphantly. Wilbur smiled and sat down next to Aster, placing another gift in front of the boy.
"I'll have to catch her next performance I guess." He grinned cheekily at Aster who shoved his face to the side with her good arm. Fundy laughed at them before opening Asters gift, which turned out to be the piano sheet music for some of the boy's favorite songs.
"I'll teach you how to play them if you'd like?" Aster asked and Fundy scrambled across the sheets to hug Aster. The young woman winced a bit at the pressure on her stomach but gave Wilbur a hard glare as he moved to get Fundy off of her.
"Thank you, Aster!" He let go of her, grinning widely before crawling back to his father's gift. Wilbur had gotten him a notebook and quill of his very own.
"So that you can write about everything that comes to your mind," Wilbur told his son as he tapped Fundy's forehead. Fundy giggled and hugged his father tightly.
"Why don't you get changed little Prince and we can all go out to the wildflowers." Fundy cheered and raced to his wardrobe to pull out clothes for the day.
Aster pushed herself to stand and walked towards the door, holding her stomach as Wilbur hovered near her like a lost puppy. They made it to the hallway and waited for Fundy. They weren't waiting long before the five-year-old slid into the hallway and, bouncing up and down, chanting "Flower field! Flower field!"
The trio made their way outside, Fundy skipping along ahead of the two young adults as Aster had to take it slow due to her injuries. They made it to the fields though and Wilbur and Aster sat down in the grass while Fundy ran through the flowers, picking a few of them and holding them in his small hands.
"How are you today?" Wilbur asked Aster quietly, taking her hand in his as he rubbed circles on her knuckles. She glanced briefly at their intertwined hands before looking up to watch Fundy run around.
"Nothing could make me feel better than today, Fundy is so happy and I'm very happy just watching him be happy." She gave Wilbur a content smile before turning back to watching Fundy run around.
It had been nearly a month and Aster had gotten her bandages off finally, new scars fresh adorning her skin. So when Wilbur found her walking past his room on her way to her own bedroom he had gotten her to detour for a bit. So now they were both sat on Wilbur's bed, backboard against their backs as Wilbur traced shapes along the back of Aster's hand.
"Aster-" He took a deep, nervous breath, "Aster can I try something?"
She gave him an odd look but nodded, "Sure, what's up Wil?"
Wilbur closed off his fears as he leaned down, closer to the young woman next to him. He heard her breath hitch as she watched him lean towards her. "Can I...?" He whispered, they were so close together they could feel each other's breath on the other. Aster answered his question by meeting their lips and kissing him gently, pulling away a second later before Wilbur kissed her again, running his fingers through her hair. This kiss lasting longer until they had to pull away for air. Both kept their eyes closed, savoring the moment before Wilbur opens his eyes as the bed shifts.
"I shouldn't- I shouldn't have done- done that- I-" Aster was walking towards the door, faint tears in her eyes.
"Aster wait-" She closed the door and Wilbur scrambled after her, into the dark hallway where swaths of moonlight came in glimpses through the windows. "Aster-" Wilbur whisper shouted after her as she walked down the hallway at a swift pace.
He jogged forward a bit and caught up to her, running around in front of her to stop her. "Aster please-"
"I can't Wil!" She whispered, "You-you're- you're a Prince-"
He cut her off by pressing a chaste kiss to her lips. "I don't care." He breathed. Aster looked unsure. "Do you love me?"
Her head shot up, her eyes meeting his as he held her hands tightly. "I shouldn't-"
"But?" Wilbur asked hopefully.
"But I'm kind of too late to not..." She mumbled, glancing off to the side as Wilbur split into a wide grin. He pulled her into a hug, kissing her forehead softly. "Wil we shouldn't-"
"I don't care Aster, I've loved you since we were fifteen and if my father has anything to say about it we can bring Fundy into this, he loves you and Phil won't say no to his grandson." Aster laughed softly into his tunic.
"That's manipulation Wil."
"Nobody has to know." He whispers dramatically and Aster laughs again.
They stand there in the moonlit hallway for a while longer, wrapped in each other's embrace. Aster breaks the silence first with a whisper, "We should get to sleep."
"Want to-"
"I'm going to my own room Wil." Aster interrupts bluntly. Wilbur buries his head in the crook of her neck, trying not to laugh.
"Alright, I'll see you in the morning Flower." Aster smiles at his old nickname for her.
"You will." She assures him before they split from the hug and Wilbur watches Aster as she walks quietly down the hall, dress fluttering behind her. When she turns out of sight he turns and goes back to his room, a giddy smile on his face.
