the hallway like a tunnel
of color / splashes of pink,
neon green, and gold / her
blue jeans and rose red
trench coat blending in / to
become part of the rainbow
/ so she could be mixed into
the recipe called school /
just a chameleon fading into
the background / for some-

the easiest way to get to the
other
side
for her, it was like watching
faces over the windowpane
of a subway train / watching
them as their lips blossomed
into lopsided smiles / watch-

mid-laugh / watching eyes
with colors beginning with
all the letters of the alphabet /
watching conversations
evolve and
bloom
and die
for her, it was like watching
through a pane of glass /
seeing everything never
experiencing / feeling the
energy and emotions mixed
in the room and knowing
hers would never be
like
theirs

before she saw him she was just another new student d r o w n i n g in a river of raincoats and umbrellas in the school hallway
