--☽--
a beam of sunlight
like a razor sharp blade of diamond
streaked over his hazel eyes,
bringing the gold out of them
as the wheel turned,
the tiles on the ground grew smaller
and the lines running over the conCrete shortened.looking dOwn,
he saw a sea of colored splotches of the people down below.
their cart asceNding toward the peakhis stomach flipped aS he looked,
but for some reason he couldn't tear his eyes away from the ground
he wondered if anyone had ever felt the same way
if they ever just wanted to jump down from the cart
to the ground below,
to feel freedom from The free fall
and a thrill as pain too painful to be fElt flashed through himthe death would be short
[are you suicidal like me?]
it was his acrophobia
that had saved him from jumping
his fear was his saviorit was getting hard to breath
his mind began to swim out in hundreds of directions and he tried to grasp his thoughts and bunch them together but they all floated out of his reach like dozens of baLLoons being scattered into the wind
[please wake me before i drown]
"are you Afraid of heights?"the girl's voice sounded
twinges of concern threaded with curiosity
he nodded withouT looking back
"then why dId you come up?"
his voice didn't shake
the way his hands did
when he answered,
"you'll see,"
the wheel turned slOwly
they were at the peak
it was almost as if he was at the top of the universe
and here at the tip of the wheel
the sky looked as big as a ceiling
and as small as something he could reach out and hold
and at the climax all his fears vanished aNd his fingers slowly relaxed
"this is what I came for,"
he spoke slowly
trying to match the beat of his words
to the speed of how the Ferris wheel moved
but he was always a little off beat
like uneven scribbles
except he didn't know scribbles could be beautiful
"the view?"
he shrugged,
"yes and a bit more than that..."
he'd come because being on the Ferris wheel made him feel free
he stare out at the city down below
over the horizon
he spotted a strip of blue
the sea
"have you been to the beach before?"
he asked absentmindedly,
out of the blue
"oh yes, of course. have you not?"
"i have... though the places i've been to have a lot of tourist trash,"
"hmm... well the sea is pretty close to my house..."
he turned slightly to look at her
she was chewing on her cheek
weighing her words carefully
for the first time he noticed a few swirls of dark blue in her eyes
"i could show you the place... if you want,"
the corners of his mouth lifted
"seems like a possibility,"
he mused casually
it was his way of saying yes--☽--
neither had noticed that their cart had finally descended to the bottom
and as they separated at the gate
he looked back once again
at the Ferris wheel, now glowing faintly with neon gold lights
the sunset fading in the background
he realized that he wasn't afraid at all through the bottom half of the journey
he wondered whythe Ferris wheel glowed like a constellation against the darkening sky
and it fascinated him that he was part of it a few minutes before
just another star in one of the carts
