Bologna Airport is not very big and is overall quite an ordinary one. Nothing in the packed buses that drove us across the apron, the busy terminal, the passport control queues or the baggage claim area, showed that we are actually in Italy.
Everyone has to wait for me to go through some more checks at Customs since I'm not an EU citizen. Two officers are asking me endless question about where I am from, why I am visiting the country, how long I have been in Europe and if I carry any goods that need to be declared.
Em finally loses patience and approaches the officers, " Forza gente!" he shouts, gesturing fervently. "Cos'è questo? lasciami portare a casa il mio fidanzato!"
(Come on guys! What is this? let me take my boyfriend home.)
One of the officers starts to laugh and hands me back my passport.
"Bene! Bene! Va tutto bene!" he pats amiably Em's shoulder. "Che grande amore! Ci scusiamo per il ritardo!"
(Fine! Fine! Everything is alright! What great love! We apologize for the delay")
He turns to me and smiles brightly, "Welcome to Italy, sir! Have a nice stay!"
"Accadrà sicuramente!" (That will surely happen!)," Em glares at him and pulls me by the hand, dragging my carry-on bag behind him. "Andiamo, Tesorino!" (Let's go, my sweet!)
"What are you calling me? Do I have a new nick name now?" I giggle, trying to keep up with his wide stride. He only pecks my lips and shakes his head, still annoyed by the unnecessary interrogation.
"Why I always end up carrying all the bags," Jamie whines, trying to handle Lucky's, Em's and his own. The other two refuse to deal with anything else but mine and Emma's carry-ons and do not allow us to take care of our own luggage.
"Cause you're too lazy to make an effort and go on a second date with someone," Lucky sneers.
"As if you were going to carry my bag if I had a girlfriend," Jamie snorts. "And I am not lazy. I just like diversity."
"I will do it. I promise," Em winks at him, wrapping an arm around my waist, "but I doubt I will have the chance any time soon."
Jamie is ready to retort, but we finally pop out in the arrivals hall and he doesn't get an opportunity.
"Aaaaa! Sunny, we are in Italy!" Emma screams and throws herself on my neck, pushing unceremoniously Em aside. "let's take pictures together."
She's pointing to a vast, glass-walls showroom with a shining, bright yellow Lamborghini Hurican and a lawn green Lamborghini Aventador inside.
Everyone is squealing and we all plaster ourselves on the glass, much to the great amusement of a tall, handsome guy with black curly hair, in an elegant, casual, navy blue suit who is smirking behind a desk inside. We start taking pictures, making funny faces, posing and laughing. He's watching us for few minutes and finally decides to come to us.
"Ciao amori, siete qui in vacanza? (Hello loves, are you here on vacation?)
"Heyyy!" we all yell enthusiastically, except Em who is squinting at him suspiciously, but soon grins mischievously, seeing that the guy's eyes are pinned on Jamie.
"Si," he answers. "we're visiting my nonna for a week."
"Oh, you're Italian then," the guy beams. "Perfetto! My name is Giovanni. Nice to meet you! Call me Gio."
"Ciao Gio! I'm Em." They hug and start patting each other's backs like old friends. "This is my boyfriend Sunny." We shake hands.
"Bravissimo! Siete una coppia molto bella! (Excellent! You are a very beautiful couple)," Gio claps his hands. "Do you want to come inside and try the cars? You can take as much pictures as you want."
Em introduces the rest of our group and a crazy photo session follows, in, around and on the hoods of the cars with Gio performing the role of the professional photographer quite successfully.
"Come here, we want you to be in the picture too," Emma waves to him.
He peeks at Lucky nervously, but seeing that he's smiling and doesn't seem to mind, instantly glues to Jamie's arm.
We finally leave the show room, an hour later, amidst countless hugs and kisses on the cheeks, having exchanged our phone numbers with the nice Italian boy.
The moment we step out, I see a booth, piled with numerous types of cheese and hanging salami and ham. They all look delicious and tempting. I unconsciously start pulling Em by the sleeve in that direction.
"No, Tesorino! We don't need to buy food from the airport. I'm sure, nonna has prepared enough to feed an army," he chuckles.
"But they look so good," I pout. I am aware that I definitely have a problem with obsessive shopping in foreign countries, but I just can't resist. "We can buy her something as a present," I hopefully add.
"Aww, ok then," Em kisses the tip of my nose, "if it makes you happy."
Another thirty minutes pass while he's translating the explanations of the enthusiastic girl behind the counter about the qualities of Ricotta Romana, Taleggio, Pecorino Toscano, Mortadella di Bologna and Parma Ham.
"Dear God!" Lucky grumbles. "Are we going to get out of this airport alive?"
The two packed shopping bags are shoved in his hands to his utter shock and dissatisfaction, but he remains silent, obviously hoping that we will finally head out.
Taxis are waiting outside in a long line.
"Oh, these are yellow at home," I exclaim. "I thought it's the same everywhere in Europe, but here they're white. I think we need two."
"No, kitty," Em shakes his head. "We don't need a taxi. Dad has left a car for us in the parking lot. We'll be sightseeing a lot, so it will be more convenient."
We somehow roll our baggage to the specified location. I really start to think that, perhaps, buying half of the merchandise on the stall wasn't such a good idea after all.
"Here we are," Em announces pointing to a vehicle and taking the keys out of his pocket.
We all stop and our jaws drop. A big, black, five seater Lamborghini Urus is waiting for us.
"I love Italy," Emma sighs dreamily and leans her back heavily on lucky's chest. He drops my bags on the ground and wraps his arms around her.
