CHAPTER THREE

ESTELLA DASHED down the hallways, trying to catch up with her friends who moved much faster than anticipated.
"Over here!" Annabeth called to the daughter of Hecate who almost passed them by. They looked through the window of the school's double doors. Outside had to be Percy and the di Angelo's
"Everything okay?" Estella asked.
"They're outside. Thorn is leading them to the cliffside," Thalia said. "But Annabeth has a plan. She's going to use her cap of invisibility to knock down Percy and the siblings. Then me, you, and Grover are going to attack Thorn."
"Okay," Estella breathed. "Sounds good to me. Let's just make sure everyone comes out alive and well."
"I second that," Grover chimed in.
They all gave one last nod before leaving the school. Annabeth slipped on her cap and charged. Percy and di Angelo's flew to the floor, signaling the rest of them to attack the monster.
Estella made it to the monster first. She teleported a few feet away and tapped her pendant. The girl held Blight confidently within her grip, and the monster's eyes briefly flashed with fear. That quickly subsided and turned to anger.
He swiped at her but Estella jumped back. She rolled to the side and slashed her blade at him. The monster screeched and kicked at the girl. She began to jump back, but not quickly enough to completely evade the attack.
The monster threw Estella into a tree. She groaned and crumpled to the ground. She could hear Percy calling her name from where he was with the di Angelos.
Thalia then charged at the monster on Estella's behalf.
If she wasn't Thalia's friend, Estella would be completely terrified. She charged with such rage it looked like she was a child of Ares. Her spear and shield together looked like death.
"For Zeus!" She cried.
She jabbed at his head, but he easily swatted the spear aside. Dr. Thorn's had morphed into a giant, orange paw with sharp claws that sliced at Thalia's shield.
Thalia quickly rolled out of the way.
A couple of hundred feet away a helicopter came into the distance. The noise was loud and distracting but Estella's eyes remained on Thalia.
Dr. Thorn launched a volley of sharp missiles towards her friend. Estella realized now why his name was Dr. Thorn. The projectiles came from a leathery, scorpionlike tail behind him. They deflected off of Thalia's shield, but the force knocked her down in the process.
Grover attacked next. He played his reed-pipes, an old happy tune, and thick vines wrapped around the monster's legs. Dr. Thorn roared.
The next thing Estella knew, he grew bigger. Like twice the size of his human form. His body was that of a lion with a human face and scorpion tail.
"A manticore!" Annabeth said. She was visible now that her Yankee Cap was in a pile of snow.
"Who are you people?" Bianca demanded. "What is that?"
"A manticore?" Nico gasped. "He's got three thousand attack power plus five to saving throws!"
Estella glanced up from her position on the ground, seeing Dr. Thorn's tail flex as the spikes were getting ready to strike.
