It was a beautiful morning, blue skies stretched out above the Southern Water Tribe village, and the silhouette of a little girl stood at the edge of the town. Sokka watched his sister walk beyond the walls around the village and sprinted after her.
"Hey, Katara! Wait for me!" he shouted.
"Sokka! Are you coming with me to see the little penguin seal pups?" his sister asked excitedly.
"Okay, but we can't be out for too long. Dad says there's going to be a storm later!"
"Ugh, Sokka... we'll be fine! They're not too far away," the Waterbender said firmly.
"AGH, Sokka! Help!" his sister's voice sounded scared and far away.
Sokka couldn't see her in the midst of all the fog that had gathered. But his heart dropped when he heard a loud roar not far from him. It sounded like a polar bear dog - a very angry one, at that. Sokka anxiously grabbed his boomerang and began looking for Katara. His heart pounded loudly in his ears and his only wish was to find Katara safe and sound.
But when he found his sister, she was lying down and bleeding from her head and arms. He picked her up and carried her through the fog when the polar bear dog appeared as a dark silhouette, its sharp teeth flexed and its paws ready to attack. What was he supposed to do? Careful not to hurt her, he lowered Katara to the ground and then looked up to the beast in front of them. Slowly, he grabbed his boomerang and threw it at the four-legged threat. It hit the animal in the head but that only seemed to make it angrier.
All Sokka could think of was protecting Katara. He had failed once before today and he wouldn't let that happen again. He was her big brother, he needed to protect her. Who else would?
