Alfie’s POV.

I dragged myself out of bed lazily knowing that Rosie would be waking up soon. As expected, my adorable little girl was sat outside my bedroom…

FLASHBACK TO JANUARY 2017

Zoe? Have you got the right number?”

I looked at my phone with a shocked expression, I hadn’t heard from Zoe since we filmed the break up video. She’d asked me not to contact her and even though it killed me at the time, I’d respected her decision.

I immediately snapped out of my thoughts as I heard Zoe yelp in pain.

“A-alfie? I’m in labor… Please don’t ask a-any questions, just come quick, i’ll text you the address”

He could hear the pain in her quivering voice, without thinking, he grabbed his keys and ran to his car typing in the hospital’s address to his GPS system.

A day later, the twenty-something year old found himself driving home with a new born in the back.

It wasn’t just a random baby though, it was his daughter… The daughter that Zoe had kept a secret throughout nine, long, agonising months.

*END OF FLASHBACK*
I happily walked down to the kitchen to start breakfast, even after five years I struggled to wake up in the morning. A smile soon spread across my face as a heard the tiny patter of feet running downstairs. It had been really hard being a single parent, but she was perfect and I was lucky enough to have lots of family and friends to support me.

No one really talked about Zoe, everyone knew what had happened… I guess we all felt guilty because we hadn’t been there for her, but it was no excuse.

No child deserved to grow up without a mother.

Rosie sat at the table shovelling cereal into her mouth as she happily told her father about her dreams. It was something they’d do every morning and the pair enjoyed the precious time together.

“why don’t I have a Mummy?” Alfie looked at his daughter curiously, she rarely mentioned her mother, it was just her and I against the world.

“What made you think about that hun”

My five year old looked at me innocently as her bottom lip began to quiver

“I- I don’t really know… Everyone else has one in school, Darcy and Isaac have Louise, Bella has Nimbobs, Thomas has Tanya. Why don’t I have a mummy?”

I sighed and pulled her into a hug as tears ran down her cheek.

“D-did I do something wrong? Did my mummy not like me?”

Sitting down on the sofa, I continued to comfort my daughter. There were times like this when I despised Zoe for leaving Rosie…

“You didn’t do anything wrong, sweetheart” I replied as I soothingly traced shapes on her back

“Your mummy just wasn’t ready, she’ll come back when the time’s right”.

Rosie’s big blue eyes looked into mine as tears continued to run down her pale face.

She looked exactly like her mother; blond hair that was slowly becoming darker cascaded around her petite frame, she had Zoe’s eyes and my eyelashes, her signature rosie red cheeks, indicating where her name comes from and plump lips that she’d nibble on when she was nervous or upset.

“Tell me about her, Daddy?” I sighed for what felt like the millionth time that morning

“Me and your mother were best friends, one thing lead to another and before I knew it, we were both falling for each other. We denied it, but eventually we found ourselves in a relationship.

We were best friends, she knew me better than I could ever know myself… We were perfect for each other”

I didn’t realise I was crying until Rosie wiped away the tear that was racing down my cheek

“What happened Daddy, you said true love lasts forever?” I stared into my young daughters beautiful eyes and smiled.

“If you really love something… you have to let it go. If it loves you, eventually it’ll come back”

Rosie snuggled into her fathers arms and sighed happily and started drifting off to sleep.

“She’ll come back one day, dad, it’s impossible not to love you”.

Alfie embraced the small girl tightly before settling down on the sofa too and eventually, falling into a light yet peaceful sleep.
