Chapter 13
Avengers tower 12:13 PM.
Sam was sitting on a white hospital bed, doctors were rushing back and forth, and there were dozens of machines beeping and buzzing in the background. Natalie was sitting right next to him, looking up at him hopefully. Peter and Aunt May were watching from afar, trying to stay out of it.
Sam's back hurt, he was thoroughly exhausted, and every muscle in his body ached. But at least he was awake...
He had to tell Natalie, and she trusted him enough to know that he'd fix it. He'd fix it...
He took a deep breath.
"Bucky... he-he got kidnapped Natalie, and I don't know what they're going to do with him... He's gone."
Natalie froze. "What?"
"Hydra took Bucky." Sam said, voice shaking.
"No. N-no that can't be right." Natalie said quietly. "You guys are superheros. You can't l-lose."
Sam sat there, silent.
"We're going to get him back Natalie. I prom-"
"How." Natalie whimpered, voice low.
"I-I don't know kid. But we are going to get him back-"
"No. How did t-they catch him?" She said, half crying. "Was it a-a net?"
Sam looked shaken, "No, they-they used your magic Natalie. It's some insanely powerful stuff. We couldn't see her, or Zemo."
"H-her?"
Sam swallowed. "Lilith. She was there."
Natalie's eyes were wide and unfocused.
"One second Bucky was there, and the next-
Natalie was crying harder. "It's-it's my fault." She coughed.
Sam tried to hug her, and she shoved him away.
"It's not your fault kid-" Sam started, desperately trying to help.
"It is!" Natalie screamed. "It's my magic! It's my fault! I shouldn't have gotten caught. I-I should've escaped. And n-n-now they-they're using my magic to hurt you guys!"
Sam looked taken aback. "It-it's not your fault Natalie."
"It-it is." Natalie said, voice breaking. Her throat was burning. "Bucky's gone. And it-it's all my fault."
"No. No, it's not kid." Sam said, crying. "It's my fault! I couldn't get to him in time."
There was silence, both of them were crying. Sam was trying to hold it together, but Natalie had completely given up. She wasn't safe anymore. It was her fault, and Bucky was gone. She wasn't really close to him, but every time he talked to her he was nice. He gave her soup, and a knife. And now he was gone, sentenced to a life of experimentation, a fate worse than death.
"Natalie-"
"I'm going to my room." Natalie growled, eyes flashing green. She looked more hostile than Sam had ever seen her. Her hands were balled up into fists, you could barely see the rainbow manicure May had given her. She was shaking, from fear, anger, or adrenaline, Sam couldn't tell.
