Chapter 9
Natalie had fallen asleep on Sam half an hour ago, and he was still shocked. He really couldn't move. It was like being trapped underneath a sleeping cat, but worse. He considered getting up to finish making himself dinner, then thought about grabbing his phone from the medbay where he'd left it... But in the end he just ended up sitting there, Natalie's head pressed up against his chest. After a few more minutes Sam gave up the idea of doing anything, and closed his eyes.
8 hours later, .
Sam had woken up a few times, the first time it was because Natalie was crying out in her sleep, he had rubbed her back until she relaxed again. The next time was because Alpine had jumped up on his lap, but after the events of the last few hours he was exhausted, and didn't have a problem going back to sleep. But he woke up for good when Bucky came back.
Bucky was in the elevator, he had an ice pack over his left eye and a huge red bandage over his left arm. He was STARVING. The base had some... challenging qualities that he was going to mention to Sam the next morning, and that was contributing to his hunger and fatigue. The elevator doors opened and he stumbled around the corner into the kitchen. He hurriedly pulled out the ingredients for a sandwich while the automatic lights turned on. The lights just illuminated the kitchen section, the rest of the common area was still dark; including the area just beyond the kitchen where Natalie and Sam had fallen asleep. Bucky's stomach was yelling at him to go faster as he pulled out the bread. He took note of the oatmeal bowl and half-made salad, but was too hungry to question it. A few minutes later he spun around with a very sloppy peanut butter and jelly sandwich in hand.
Sam was in his line of sight now, but Bucky was too busy inhaling the sandwich to see him. He turned around to make another sandwich for himself, and filled up a glass of water. After he ate the other sandwich he slowed down a little bit, now that he wasn't moving the fact that he was shaking was apparent. He gulped down the glass of water, then looked up. Bucky was trained to be quiet, he unintentionally walked around silently. He would often scare his teammates by just appearing places, never making a sound. So Sam was still asleep on the couch, Natalie and Alpine curled up next to him. Bucky raised an eyebrow and set down his glass of water. He could make out Sam's head over the back of the couch in the dark. But he was exhausted, his brain could be filling in the shadows, and making him see things.
"Hey Friday? Can you turn on some lights over there?" He asked quietly.
"I would Mr. Barnes, but Mr. Willson and Natalie are asleep on the couch, do you still want me to turn on the lights?"
Bucky's eyes widened, "No! No thank you, don't turn on the lights. Why isn't Natalie in her room? Did something happen?" He had raised his voice a bit in surprise, and Sam had woken up.
"Hey Bucky?" He said as loudly as he dared, Natalie was still asleep on his chest. "Can you be a little more quiet please? I'm trying to keep the kid asleep."
Bucky looked over at the couch, and made out his friend's head.
"Sorry Sam, did I wake you?" He said quietly.
"Yeah, do you wanna come over here for a second?"
"Friday?" Sam continued, "Please turn on a few lights, keep them dim." His voice was barely above a whisper, but Natalie shifted a bit in her sleep, and Sam froze. Alpine was sitting on Sam's lap asleep as well.
The lamp by the armchair flickered on, and a few of the overhead lights turned on, they were on the dimmest setting, and cast a hazy glow over the common area.
Bucky walked over, perfectly silent as always. His hair was a mess, and he was wearing half of his suit. He had taken off the straps that held all his gear in place, exposing a sweaty black undershirt. He had black pants on, but he had taken off his boots and was walking around the tower barefoot. Sam's eyes widened as he saw Bucky's injuries, he still had the ice pack pressed up against his eye, and his normal arm was covered in bandages, his metal one was singed in a few places, but was otherwise unharmed.
