Day One

After breakfast the next day, we all walk into the Torchwood Hub so Tosh can help us log in to the system and start our work experience. So far, she's the only person in the Hub. 'Morning, queens,' she says.
'Morning, Tosh,' I say. 'Long time, no see! How are you?'
'Same as always,' Tosh says. 'Work keeps me busy. What about you?'
'Okay,' I reply. 'Can you please help us log into the system?'
'Of course.' Tosh locates our personel files.

'Is it necessary to update them?' Anne asks.
'We need to keep updated on each of you,' Tosh explains. 'Are there any changes since you were last at Torchwood? You know, changes in mental or physical health?'
'Er...' Anne says, and she glances at the rest of us. 'Yeah, there have been some significant changes to our mental health.'
'What changes?'
'We became suicidal,' Anna says.
'How bad is it?'
'Very bad,' Jane says. 'Most of us have suicidal thoughts almost daily.'
'Does Mum and Mummy know?' I ask.
'Ruby knows,' Anne confirms. 'We don't know if Sarah Jane knows or not yet.'

'When did the suicidal feelings start?' Tosh asks. She's biting her lip and glances between each of us before settling on Anne.
'1912,' Anne says.
'1944,' Catalina says. Jane says 1958, Anna says 1963, and Kitty says 1967.
'What about you, Emma?' Tosh asks.
'I haven't gone back in time yet.'
'I know, but have you had any feelings like that at all?'

I think back to when we first watched the 1997 Titanic. I felt suicidal then; I wanted to take my own life. But now, I know that would've been stupid. All of history would've changed. 'It was only the one time,' I say. 'After we watched the '97 film together, but Mum talked me out of it.'
'Thank God,' Catalina says. 'I don't know how much would've changed if Ruby hadn't done that.'
'Yeah, it's not worth thinking about that.'

Tosh adds the years to each of our files. 'What about your older self, Emma?' She asks. 'Is she suicidal?'
'Yeah. Older Emma's been suicidal since 1912.'
'Is there a link between the time you started committing suicide and the date Anne started?'
'We were...' Anne's voice trails off. 'We were all on the Titanic.'
'Oh, I'm sorry to hear that,' Tosh says. She finishes filling in our files as Owen walks in.

'Morning, people!' He calls. 'We've got a busy day today! Morning, queens!'
'Morning, Owen,' Tosh call back. 'Right, queens, you should be set up next door. If you ever need help, we'll be happy to help.'
'Yeah, call on us whenever you need us,' Owen agrees.
'We will,' Anne promises.

'You okay, Emma?' Owen asks.
'Yeah,' I sigh.
'Okay, well, remember we're here for you. That goes for all of you, alright?' Owen pulls on his doctor's jacket and heads into the autopsy room. Anne leads us back to our base.

'I'm ready to monitor the rift,' Jane says. 'If there's any suspicious activity, we can go and investigate it. That's  if Torchwood hasn't got there already.' I nod and head over to another station, where a single computer is sitting. I turn it on and log in. If nothing is going on here, I could look into the other rooms that are here.

I head into the corridor and start looking in the different rooms. There is something like a staff room in one of them, which is interesting. I take a look around, and it seems like every other staff room. I head out to look at some of the other rooms. Most are bedrooms if people need or want to stay over, but there are a few exciting rooms. One of them is a shooting range that has a range of weapons, not just the guns that Torchwood uses. There are knives, swords, and anything else you can think of lying on the table. I pick up a sword, and it feels lighter than I expected. As it's made of metal, I expected it to be heavy, but I can easily move it. I put the sword back and head back out.

When I head back to the main area, it seems like the other queens have already started arguing. 'We are not going to start a game of monopoly with no rules!' Jane yells. 'We're meant to be working.'
'Yes, but Jack didn't give us anything specific to work on!' Anne says. 'What are we meant to do?'
'We need to make ourselves useful, so that means monitoring the rift, maybe working on a few alien files and updating those for Torchwood, anything we can to help.'
'Jane's right,' I agree. 'We need to help Torchwood in any way we can.'
'Then where were you?' Anne asks.
'Exploring. I thought I should make myself familiar with the place. Did you know they have a training room full of different weapons?'
'No, where is it?' I take the other queens into the training room, and they gasp in wonder at the weapons lying on the table.

'What are we meant to do with them?' Anna asks.
'Train with them, I guess,' Anne says, picking up the same sword I admired earlier. I find a gun and load it, point it at one of the targets and shoot it.
'Whoa,' Jane says. 'You look like you know what you're doing!'
'I already trained with Jack once.'
'Right.' Jane looks at the weapons. 'I'd rather not use weapons if I don't have to. I will if I must, but I'd rather work behind the scenes.'
'I understand,' I assure her. The others start picking up other weapons and testing them out.

'I see you found the training room,' Jack says as he walks in.
'It's brilliant,' Anne says. 'Thanks, Jack!'
'You're welcome. Oh, if you have any problems with the lights, we do have a visitor that influences them.'
'Is it Sky?' Kitty asks, and we all stare at him, interested.
'Who's Sky?'

Oh.

We all lose interest quickly. Catalina, Anne, Anna and Kitty look back at the weapons. Jane finds a notebook and starts taking some notes. I watch the others as they practice. The next time I look at the door, Jack is gone. Maybe I should've taken more interest in what he said, but we all hoped Sky was in the Hub. But she's not here.

I head back into the main area, and Jane follows me a few minutes later and heads over to the computer. 'There still isn't anything strange with the Rift. Is there anything strange going on in Cardiff?'
'No, not really,' I say. I have the news page open, and there isn't anything odd happening. I always thought that Cardiff was full of strange goings-on. I was wrong.

The lights start flickering, then turn off. 'What happened with the lights?' Anna asks as she and Catalina walk through.
'Nothing from us,' I say as I check the computer. 'Wait, Jack said Torchwood had a visitor that influences the lights. It must be from them.'
'I guess.'

I look back at the computer, and all sorts of things are appearing. Someone blew up the M4 link road. Not only that but Patrick Grainger's dead- murdered. I call Mum and Mummy, but my phone says there's no signal. 'It looks like the telephone network's gone,' I say.
'I'll see if Torchwood is onto the case,' Anna says. She heads through into the Torchwood hub. Anne and Kitty walk through.
'What happened to the phones?' Anne asks.
'The telephone network is down,' I say. 'All we can do is wait.'

'Jack is onto the case,' Anna assures us as she walks back through. 'There are some Sleeper Agents in Cardiff, and he's chasing after the last one now. They're why the telephone network is gone.'
'That explains a lot,' Kitty says. 'But I guess there isn't much we can do but wait.'

I continue looking at news sites, but nothing else is coming up. Maybe that's all the carnage these Sleeper Agents will cause. I hope we'll get some answers soon.

'I think I'm picking up some rift activity!' Jane calls, and we gather around the computer. 'Just outside of Cardiff, see?'
'I see what you mean,' Catalina agrees. 'Let's go and see what that is.'
'Don't we want to do some research first and see what we're getting into?' I ask.
'There might not be time.' Catalina grabs the car keys Jack left for us, and we head to the garage, where our car is waiting. It's an eight-seater, so we can all fit easily. Catalina slams a foot on the gas, and we speed off, out of Cardiff.
'If we die because of your reckless driving, I'm going to kill you!' Anne yells.
