John opened the door to the apartment he shared with his girlfriend, Peggy. Looking around, he noticed that Peggy wasn’t in the living room as she normally was when he came home from work. “Peggs! I’m home!” He called out, but to no response. His eyebrows furrowed. He didn’t want to assume the worst right out of the gate, but normally Peggy let him know if she wasn’t going to be home when he came back from work. So, this was a little concerning.

He went down the hall quietly, making no noise but his footsteps, trying to listen for any sign of her. But, he wasn’t hearing anything. That was, until he heard a quiet, muffled sob coming from the bedroom. He quickly rushed in to see Peggy curled up in a ball on the floor, shaking intensely. “Oh Peggs…” John said softly, crouching down to touch her arm when she suddenly screamed.

“NO! PLEASE DON’T TOUCH ME!” She yelled, making John flinch. Peggy never yelled...something was very wrong.

“Peggy...it’s me. John. I’m not here to hurt you.” He said gently. “Look at me. Please?” John asked softly.

Peggy froze for a moment. “Y-You don’t want to see it....”

“It?” John asked, unsure what she was talking about.

Peggy nodded. “Y-You’ll...y-you’ll get mad…” She murmured.

John frowned further. He hated seeing his partner like this. He knew she had a rougher past, but he was so dedicated to her that he wouldn’t let anything get in the way of his love. “I promise. I won’t. I just want to see so I can help you and make you feel better, my love.” He said softly.

After a few moments, Peggy sighed shakily and lifted her face up, and John saw a sight that was heartbreaking and anger-inducing at the same time. Her face and neck were littered with bruises and small cuts, she had a black eye, and semi-dry blood had been dripping from her mouth, a large cut on her lips. Her eyes were filled to the brim with tears, and the emotions in her eyes were overwhelming.

John stared for a moment, but stayed silent. He scooched closer to Peggy slowly. “Let me take a look, baby girl.” He whispered, lifting her chin tenderly, taking a closer look at the injuries on Peggy’s face. He delicately wiped the blood off of her face, a look in his eyes that the girl was unable to decipher.

Once he finished, he was still completely silent, but only for a brief moment. He looked Peggy dead in the eyes, making her heart skip a beat out of nerves. “Who did this to you?” He asked, but it wasn’t in the same tone that he had been speaking to her previously. It was tense and dark, the fury that was evident in his hazel eyes just barely withheld.
Peggy felt the tears she had just barely been holding back slip down her cheek, as she began to shake intensely. “I...c-can’t tell...y-you…” She whispered, her voice wavering.

John’s fists clenched, evidently frustrated that he didn’t know what was going on, and upset at everything that sat in front of him. “Why not?” he asked, a growl of sorts escaping his throat.

Peggy was getting more distressed by John’s demeanor, as she hugged herself. “H-He’d hurt me again...he c-could hurt y-you…” She managed through her sobs.

John’s eyes narrowed. “Who is he? How do you know him?” He asked, the anger beginning to slip through in his voice.

Peggy shook her head. “P-Please stop asking questions. I-I can’t answer.” She stuttered, her mind beginning to swirl as an alarm was blaring in her mind, screaming at her to make it stop.

“Peggy! I need to know! Just answer the question!” John insisted, raising his voice as the fire burning in his eyes got more intense.
“S-Stop asking questions John!” Peggy said, her own voice raising, though it still wavered.

“Peggy-” John started, but he couldn’t finish before he was cut off by Peggy.

“STOP!” Peggy screamed out, making the room go silent, except for her sobs.

John went quiet, being snapped out of his rage, and making him realize something. He had been so consumed by his fury towards whoever attacked Peggy that he didn’t think about the thing that mattered most in the situation...Peggy herself. He took a deep breath, reaching his hand out for Peggy to take. “Peggs...I’m…” He paused, trying to keep himself from bursting into his own sobs, though tears pricked at his eyes, threatening to come down. “So...sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you, I just...I want to protect you at all costs. I want to do everything I can to help you recover from your past, to make you feel treasured and loved again. Y-You...you’re my everything, Peggy. I can’t bear the thought of losing you. Please...forgive me.” John said, his voice full with emotion and sincerity.

Peggy was quiet for a moment but whispered something softly to John, something that made tears fall down his face. “Hold me.” She murmured, leaning against him. “Please.”

John made no hesitation and took her into his arms, cradling her as he stroked her hair gently. “You’re safe, my love. Nothing can take you away from me. I won’t let them.” He said, before looking down at her and cupping her cheek very carefully, not wanting to cause any pain for her. He looked into her amber eyes, the light and warmth slowly returning. “You know you’re beautiful, right?” John asked, a small smile on his face.

Peggy looked confused by this question. “What?” She asked, her voice soft.

“Because you are. You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen lots.”

Peggy’s cheeks darkened with a blush. “Y-You’re just saying that...there’s no way.” She stuttered, somewhat hesitant to believe John.

John smiled wider, before pressing a soft kiss on her forehead. “Inside and out, Miss Margarita Schyuler. You’re everything I could ever want and more."

Peggy's whole face felt like it was on fire, a dark shade of red. "J-John?"

John looked into Peggy's eyes, his eyes filled with pure love and adoration. "Yes, dear?"

Peggy lifted herself up just slightly, just enough to kiss John's freckled nose. "I love you."

John blushed slightly, before gently pulling Peggy up on his lap and kissing her tenderly on the lips, in which Peggy melted into. "I love you too. More than you could ever imagine."
