Tangletuft woke in her bedding in the warriors' den. She stayed still for several moments before reluctantly lifting her head, and peeking around herself with her still asleep eyes.
Her eyes stopped as she met up with her brother Breezefoot. The tom stared at his paws, and stayed still as a rock, his face looking as though he'd lost a million cats, but it was just one Clanmate.
Breezefoot let in a surprised and choked breath before wheezing out, and his head fell onto his paws.Tangletuft watched, dipping her head in sympathy. After several heartbeats of watching, she hauled herself out of her bedding and made her way over to her brother, who hadn't noticed her until she had spoken.
"Are you okay?"
Breezefoot looked up then quickly looked down, vigorously shaking his head "Yeah why wouldn't I be?"
Tangletuft paused, hesitating as if this was a stranger. But it was only her brother. She sat beside him, and he turned away, as if he was in fact a stranger "Are you sure? You seem upset."
"Well I'm not." Breezefoot stubbornly meowed, plainly shrugging his shoulders afterwards.
Tangletuft inhaled a deep breath, letting the air refresh her lungs before she exhaled, feeling slightly dazed after. She gazed at her brother, slowly lifting her tail and gracefully placing it securely on the square of Breezefoot's back "Does this have something to do with Smoketail?" She softly asked, and Breezefoot's ears perked.
"What? No. I-I hate that cocky she-cat," Breezefoot bursted out, earning a confused yet surprised glare from Tangletuft. "Well..." He paused, beginning to think.
Tangletuft moved in closer, feeling every exhale from Breezefoot on her face, she looked up and waited for him to speak.
"Maybe... Maybe it does have something to do with her. Maybe." He stammered before his feelings changed as he was now facing Tangletuft, his shoulders scrunched up like his nose was "But it doesn't matter because she's gone forever. I wouldn't like a stupid loner either. I thought she was Clan-born."
Tangletuft slightly gaped, before quickly regaining her posture "That's seems a bit harsh don't you think?"
"Well it's the truth," Breezefoot closed his eyes, as if to say 'get over it' in his motions. As his eyes began to reopen he started to speak once more "Don't you have a patrol to join or something?"
Tangletuft shrugged "I don't know actually. I was probably asleep when Grasspelt was announcing the patrols for the day."
"I think every cat was," Breezefoot added, letting out a pitiful laugh "Go ask her."
"Aren't you going to come with me?" She asked, pulling herself out of the nest and facing her brother.
But he shook his head "Nah. Just tell me if I'm on a patrol alright?"
"Oh okay." Tangletuft awkwardly replied before squishing out of the den and having soft rays peer at her white fur.
She stared around for just a moment, taking in the warm landscape. It was definitely Newleaf now. The last time she'd felt warmth underneath her paws was when she was a kit due to the over-extended leafbare. She shook her head, spitting internally at her stupid hatred for leafbare.
Tangletuft eased her way over to Tallrock, glancing up at the huge boulder above her then dodging the rock and making her way into the Meeting Hollow, where she presumed Grasspelt would be.
And so she was. She was huddled up in the middle of the clearing, pebbles piled in front of her and she stared at them, as if they meant something.
Tangletuft watched as she grabbed a dark gray pebble, and as she threw it into the large pile of pebbles near the border of the hollow. Did that stone represent Smoketail?
But her questions weren't answered. Grasspelt noticed the warrior and instantly sat on the pebbles, the few with sharp edges digging their way into her behind. She cringed.
"What was that?" Tangletuft asked, pouncing a paw forward.
"Nothing. It doesn't matter," Grasspelt fumbled with her paws in front of her "It's a way of organizing."
Tangletuft paused. Organizing? Did she have a stone for every cat in WindClan? What did her pebble look like?
But she moved on "Oh okay. So Breezefoot and I were wondering if we were put on any patrols. We kind of missed you announcing it this morning.""That's because I didn't mention it." Grasspelt stated, shrugging her shoulders.
"What why not? You're the deputy you have to do that every day. It's part of your duties." Tangletuft's tail waved behind her, but stopped as Grasspelt gave out an answer.
"We lost a warrior Tangletuft. All those moons of work, all that prey that fed her, all the cats that cared for her wasted their time, energy and love. I took this day as a mourning day... You'll understand later." Grasspelt finished, looking at her brown paws.
"What do you mean 'later'?" Tangletuft looked at Grasspelt.
"You know you still have to face that prophecy." Grasspelt echoed and Tangletuft reared backwards, the deputy's words catching her off-balance.
