Once upon a time, there was nothing that separated the two of you. Once upon a time you both were soaring above the clouds, your hearts alight and your souls carefree. So what happened? Why did you fall apart? He missed you so much—the softness of your skin, the flickering hues of your eyes, the touch of your lips—why couldn't he let those things go? He was trapped in a dizzy universe that constantly reminded him of the things he had lost, the things he had done wrong. He despised the world—blamed it for all his problems, all his losses, all of his regret.
He would trade his soul to the devil to go back to that day, that beautiful Friday night. He had lost his job that day, and retreated to the dark holes of the clubs, drinking until he could only glimpse the speckled lights of the bar. You had saved him—that day, you had saved him. You were the one who picked up a drunken stranger and gave him a place to rest, to piece himself back together. You were the one who listened while he broke apart and said profanities to the world. You were the one who brought back meaning to his life.
Your relationship went so well, a seamless pattern with no holes; everything was right, everything was whole. His life seemed secure, wonderfully safe and warm. It had gone so beautifully well.
So what happened?
His love for you slowly diminished as he reverted back to his old ways—nights at the bar became more common, and the quarrels between you two escalated until the household was crammed with shouts and tears. You tried so desperately to retrieve him, to renew the love that was once unbreakable.
But he had pushed you away every time—he shoved your soothing words into a chest and locked it, throwing it into the deepest depths for it disintegrate and merge with the sand. The gleaming tower you had established fell as shards of hatred were flung at it. Piece by piece it crumbled until there were only burnt ruins left. The windows that once displayed a gentle kindness, the spires that once portrayed love, were gone.
You lost all emotion for him—everything that you once shared with him dissipated. There was nothing left of your love. You had nothing but remorse for him. You told him, told him everything you were feeling, hoping that he would come back, that he would see your pain and love. But it was useless—he saw you as weak, unable to withstand the reality of the world.
You didn't understand. But maybe you never would. You gave up. Nothing would work and you didn't want to work for it anymore.
Your watery [e/c] eyes stared out of the airplane's window, watching the clouds stream by as you ascended into the heavens. You took a deep breath, feeling the burdens that had plagued you for so long float off of your shoulders and leave you.
This was it.
This was the beginning of the end.
And you felt free. All your ties with him had finally snapped and you smiled unconsciously as tears of joy slipped out.
Levi would soon discover that you had left without a single "Goodbye".
He was too late. There was no chance of picking up those lost pieces now.
